Long term cruising and age

Very true.when I srrived in Sweden there were very few houses for sale. Capital gains tax etc took 25% of the money recieved to buy another house. So people could not sell. But there were a lot of run-down houses called Dödsbo where the house was sold by relatives or the state.after the owner died. A real estate agent explained this to me. When an elderly house owner can no longer handle the house he goes into state or private care home system. The owner is so dis-heartened he had no will or reason to live he was dead within 6 month. In the 30 years I have lived here I have gone through four dödsbo. The last one I swore never again because fed up with repairs so bought one off a living owner. He died before hand over. IMO having a goal or unrealised ambition keeps hope alive.

I can see the appeal though of a trawler style mobo with advancing years give more spare time with absence of work . Many ex sailors seem to have move on to Bene Trawlers for example and in late 60s might be a cosy option and be able to see more. Many old Traders seem to turn into floating holiday cottages though maybe down to fuel costs but I guess something which cruises at say12 knots means more places to visit etc .

We think it will be earlier and might even stop now we are both 60. It’s joints, lots of joints making life at an angle much less fun, and ether is no way we can afford a cat. Getting physio and a few things sorted out, but we both have to enjoy it to continue, and both have to remain excited by the new places and new challenges, and we feel we are on repeat.

So could be 5 years and could be next year.

Sad to hear that. I was never sporty in my youth and missed out on the batterings friends' joints got at rugby and football. Their lives revolve/revolved around waiting lists.

Living with stairs is a great help - you never get "bungalow legs".

,Well, there comes a point where "long term" anything and age become arithmetically incompatible.

But I just bought a neglected Trident 24, at 72.

I would likely enjoy the work more without the arthritus, so earlier would have been better, but at this point the only alternative is not doing it at all.

Where's the sport in that?

Will the engine outlive you?

Provided health and fitness can be maintained, there can't be such a thing as an age when you should / must stop long-term cruising. Can there ?. I would love to hear examples of ages when you stopped, or plan to, and perhaps why, if you are comfortable sharing. This is for long term (maybe 10-15 years) planning. Many thanks everyone :) ..........
Your "Provided health and fitness can be maintained" proviso is a bit odd, since it essentially pre-empts the discussion.

Health and fitness can't be maintained, and that's why people stop.

I can't think of any other reason age would curtail ones activities, unless they were somehow unseemly for greybeards, or perhaps involved a pitch to an age-sensitive audience. Women, for example.

That'll also be why most responses ignore this proviso, and discuss the influence of health and fitness

Of course health and fitness can be maintained. Stop boozing, eating fry ups and take exercise, for example.

You are the agent in these matters not destiny.

None of which will save you from random cell mutations or congential illnesses. They might up your odds, but there's plenty of fit, well-fed people that have dropped dead from heart problems or had a non-lifestyle cancer crop up. On the other side of the coin, I give you Keith Richards - long may he live - who is not renowned for his lifestyle choices.

The voice of doom.

The voice of doom.
Not at all, but a voice of statistical reality who saw his partner go through cancer twice before 45 and his chain-smoking father live to 90. These cases are, of course, outliers on the bell curve, but the reality is that, in the context of this conversation, no amount of quinoa and yoga are going to keep you healthy for ever if your genes go against you.
