Mooring pickup chain/rope

A loop of chain for me...drops over the Samson post. Shackle moused, and the chain in plastic pipe to minimise any wear anywhere. Works for me!

I use oversized 3-ply which jams in the bow roller cheeks and doesn't wear much - but when the mooring swivel jammed, the boat rotated one way and opened up the ply, releasing the eye splices, and the boat ended up on the beach. I've gone the octoplait and firehose route now.

My mooring is in a strong tidal estuary and during Westerly gales when the tide is against the wind the yachts sail about their moorings. Nearly all the moorings have rope risers. The worst storm we had 5 boats come off the moorings. All from chafe over the bow roller or fairleads. In my case the leather anti chafe wore through then the 50mm Seagreen polyprop [UV stabilized and new] 30 foot yacht. The problem was not the roller or fairleads so much but the side supports and the forestay tang down the bow. These have to have rounded corners and a polished finish. Then add the poly flat fire hose, cheapest insurance ever!

As above, your enemy is chafe. Personally I just use 20mm three strand (30' 3.5Te boat), protected by plastic tubing. I do however have two of them so that if one fails the boat won't come adrift and also have the advantage that the club are very conscientious and after a spell of bad weather will go out in the launch and make sure that everything is ok.

We have the added issue of having a bobstay which has the potential to chafe. On the other hand, the grating noise the current chain sometimes makes against the bobstay can be a bit annoying.
