Moody 27 with bilge keels... do they got to windward well? I am an ex-racer doing the family thing, so have never sailed a bilge keeler but know that some models are better than others in this respect.

Any (knowledgeable) comments about the boats?

Not so well as a fin keeler but why not ask on the Moody Owners site? Despite being existing owners you would get a good steer and lots more info.

Moody Owners

There's an owner of a twin-keeled Sadler 29 who will pop up at any moment and enthuse about his boat's performance - he regularly stuffs the opposition in club racing.

In my experience of hundreds of charters and quite a few boats owned, bilge keelers don't sail well to windward, period. Just look at the built-in disadvantage of shallow draft alone: how do you think a Sigma 33 would perform with a 3ft keel?

The best I've sailed was a Seawolf 30 (the 26 is good too): designed by David Feltham who was obsessed with achieving a good windward performance. Guess what: we did come home with the chocolates, tho we often lost it downwind: too much surface area. Irate competitors would walk along the pontoon and prod underneath with a boathook to check on the underwater shape - you get a very good allowance on PY if you have two keels,

There was a thread earlier about buying boats that size which ran on to mention Portmouth Yardsticks. If performance matters when compiling a shortlist I would always look at established handicaps.

However, the performance of the Moody 27 is descrbed as "excellent" in one guidebook. Sounds encouraging!

This may, or may not, be an example of conflicting constraints, but don't forget the "family thing". Depending on children and their ages, they'll love drying out on a sandy beach....

hi,
i thought about the moody 27 but the py handicap points towards them being very slow
i have raced and owned a hunter horizon 272 twin keeler and they really do race well and are competitive, another frequenter in our races was a sadler 26 twin keel which also went very well and had the edge on pointing due to huge foresail

Ah yes indeed, and the point of the article was that some bilge keelers are fine and others are s**t - hence my specific question about the Moody 27! A friend with a Hunter Horizon 26 is very impressed... I was wondering whether to Moody was comparable.
