MOBO's V Raggies

Re: MOBO\'s V Raggies

I have never come across lock rage or channel rage before.

At least in North Wales at Port Dinorwic lock, numbers trying to lock in or out is not an issue. Not many movements, even on a busy weekend.

I'll leave the lock rage to you southerners.

Re: MOBO\'s V Raggies

Last weekend I dropped anchor in a nice little spot out in open water to have lunch. After about an hour lots of little sailing dinghys came past with some of them cutting it really close and I mean inches close. Turns out I'm anchored directly on the racing line between two markers. Now under normal circumstances I would have moved but because they were getting so close and with all the dirty looks etc I thought [--word removed--] it, I'm staying right where I am and they can just lump it. All the boats then gave me a fairly wide berth except this old couple in an old wooden boat. They kept passing VERY close which was concerning me and if I looked at them I was getting scowled at. So I decided that the next time they come round if they get that close again I was going to throw eggs at them and shout " every time you come that close to me I'm going to do it again" As my luck would have it the race finished and they didn't come round again. DAMN!!!!!

I think the dinghy racers were particularly inconsiderate in setting a course where you may have wished to moor.
As Shipswoofy says, I can't think why there is a divide between raggies and tossers.

Re: MOBO\'s V Raggies

When a group of sailing dinghies from our club were picking their way up the river Medina under sail recently it was the Mobos who were anticipating their tacks and going to some lengths to keep out of their way. Most of the raggies seemed to be motoring up the same groove that they always use and completely ingnoring the dinghies.

Re: MOBO\'s V Raggies

Sorry. My comment appeared to make all MOBOs into tossers, whereas we all know only a few are (but they can make up for the rest)

Re: MOBO\'s V Raggies

Can't think why someone who anchors on a race course and refuses to move (and threatens to throw eggs at the racers) would even have a word like arrogance in his vocabulary.

I know quite a few Stinkies and most enjoy watching a race , but from a bit further away. Still, if you think you can smell arrogance, it may be the backdraft.

Re: MOBO\'s V Raggies

You have your opinion of me and I have mine of you. The long and the short of it is I was never politely asked to move and if someone had done so I would have. But to try and bully me into moving is not going to get the desired effect. I will not yeald to bullying of ANY kind and to try to force me to move by coming about 6 inches from my boat is dangerous and childish as far as I'm concerned. As for throwing eggs, he's lucky I dont have a porta potti to tip over as he passed.

Re: MOBO\'s V Raggies

Since when is coming close to something but not hitting it bullying??

Since when is following a race course without hitting anyone at anchor arrogance??

Since when is throwing eggs at someone who's done you no harm acceptable??

Try dinghy racing, you'll soon discover that 6" is plenty of clearance between boats - I'm sure you've come within 6" of someone elses car when parking/ manoevering...Are you a bully too???

Lighten up, boating (in all it's forms) is supposed to be fun.

Re: MOBO\'s V Raggies

Erm - our fleet passes through anchored boats during most races, it is a recognised anchorage, some vessels are further out in the channel than I would be, but that is their choice - I'm not aware of any of our dinghy racing fleet scowling at the ppl on board - I usually ask for "white with one" as we pass ... it would be nice to have a galley on the RS400 !!
6" can be enough for me, but I don't go that close if the owners are visably onboard, apart from anything else, it is hard to judge 6" on the lee side (watch the mast & boom!) and 6" on the windward side will result in a HUGE wind shadow and slow me down ... 6' is much more likely ...

I have had once incident of passing through a racing fleet and had abuse hurled at me, but the startline was across the complete width of the north channel on the approach to Southampton water AND they were not under starters orders yet, let alone racing ... to cap it all, we were on Starboard - sailing with full sail on a 38'er, they were all Laser1s mostly on port (the ones hurling the abuse were). As far as I'm concerned the colregs don't even enter into it - there was no clear path (even weaving) that we could've taken, and by letting us through unhindered the Lasers wouldn've have been to inconvienanced ...
now put it the other way - they had just started and we were sailing through (we were going down wind they would have started going upwind) we would have done our best to keep out of the way of the majority of the fleet, even if we were standon

I can't understand why some dinghy racers assume the big boats are just there to annoy them ..

Re: MOBO\'s V Raggies

I had the same experience a while ago lower down the straits. After crossing Caernarvon bar in a 32 ft cruiser I was faced with a regatta seemingly consisting of every small sailboat in Wales. After picking my way through them all the way at about 4 knots ducking and weaving, naturally without a single wave of acknowledgement from any participant, I arrived within half a mile of the sewellies where I was now about to miss my window through and increased speed to about 6 knots.with min. wake- you should have heard the language/fist waving etc. I was bloody furious. The whole navigation had been taken over without so much as a kiss my a**e and no consideration for any body elese with the audacity to want to pass through the straits when they were playing on it.

Re: MOBO\'s V Raggies

I know this post is getting a bit old, but it seems that the problem is not with 'proper' yachts racing but with swarms of dinghies who can turn on a sixpence and float in a beer spill but have this need to hold their races in the middle of narrow channels using channel buoys to turn on.

Perhaps a forum lurker who is involved in dinghy racing could enlighted us as to why they behave like this.

I have just returned from a weekend of boating and encountered many many yachts who were courteous and polite, a few mobo drivers who needed some lessons and one dinghy salior who drove over my anchor chain and then proceeded to give me a right mouthfull.

Incidentally, went into Conway River for the first time. Harbour Master very friendly and helpful.
