Mildew on sails

Have just removed my fully battened mainsail from the boat and find some patches of what looks like mildew on it. The sail did get wet coming round from Hamble to Shoreham in a Force 7/8 and sat in its statpack for 10 days before being taken down. Have not experienced mildew before. Any ideas on why it has become slightly mildewed and how to get rid of the mildew during the washing/cleaning process about to begin? Thanks

remove the bleach with lots of water, cotton stitching doesn't like bleach.
