Med berths

Speaking hyperthetically of course, if one was to hire a years berth in a Med marina say 12m (about 40ft)
and you turned up in a boat 3-4ft longer would they get the hump and refuse you or just take extra money?

They don't seem to notice, to be honest, I've never been checked and my boat is 17.5 meters, but actually more like 22 with the daviits dinghy etc.

Thats good news CC, although they have asked me to provide current boat details i.e. name, length
insurance, registration etc, I am at liberty to change it albeit slightly longer.

By the way thats in strict contrast to my previous Thames berth where they masured the boat up to
the front rails to davits. Had to remove the davits to save yearly rental by about £300

Thing is, in the med, they don't normally charge by the boat length, they charge by the berth size, I got caught like that, I was in the only available berth in Estepona for me, a 25 meter berth, you can imagine the price, I didn't stay long!! /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Aha you old bugger....not back from organising the 12m berth more than five minutes and already looking to see if you can up the size a bit and get away with it.....glad to see nothings changed much while you've been away !
Now then, I'm a bit confused by this bloody signature line of yours.........

TCM probably better on this than me, but recent experience says:-

However in S of France , capital and therefore rental costs are a function of Berth size which applies to both LOA and Beam. These rental rates are agreed annually (see below) and apply therfore to all hirings via Capitainerie.

Each port is effectively a 'copropriete' which means that each berth size is allocated a number of 'units/shares'. Consequently 10x4.2 = 14x3.8 (all metres) in terms of units.

General rule (so I'm told) is add minimum 10cm to boat's actual beam (for fenders!) and take 10% OFF actual LOA (margin for error!!!) and you have your minimum berth size.

This only obviously applies if you're non-French and logical , as in that particular case .. Cash is king.

If you go into most med marinas, you'll see that the berths are actually rented out by the width. In antibes frxample, they go all the way up to 8 metres wide, and wider at the IYC where the monster boats are at the entrance.

The width is fixed fixed fixed, no negotitation, no nothing. But the length is indeed a bit negotiable. But only a bit. There are fixed distances between the ponttons, so a craze for long skinny boats would mean nobody can get out.

So, berths have become standard sized, at (frexample) 23x 6 metres or 15 x 5 metres, and in both these example at every med port i can think of yold be fine with another 3-4 feet in length but you must be able to get in the width including fenders. The broker or marina will have chapter and verse -especially bout the width - to the centimetre.

Sorry not all med berths, on the costa del crime, the berths are done by length, also in Ibiza town, Barcelone and a few others I've been in. I seem to think this might be a more French thing. But you should know, been there a lot longer than me.

OK. He sed "med" think I was supporting his general hope thast they'd be a lot less worried about length than in UK, frexample. I do know that quite few people "wing it" and hope that "they won't be unreasonable" and turn up to small berth with wide boat, but they are told NO. I wd ask first, meself, or check that the same size boat is in one of those berths.

In some places a boat 10% longer is allowed in a 12mberth. INterestingly, you usually seem to pay for the berth in the med, no measuring of your boat as in UK.

I hope they were satisfied?

In st tropez, in summer, they want to keep it all swish, so they limit the old town port to boats OVER 21,5 metres during july and august. If you try and reserve, the screechy lady will broadcast on channel 9 that "You are not long enough, monsieur!"

Astute observation Tony I'll have to change the length of the word.

Risking life and limb ?, well you did get me worried out on deck taking those pics in the F4

Only risk Phil took was consuming me aging pot noddles, but there again hes used to them as the only
food on board.

Get this then, hes just spends three weeks crusing round from Brighton to Del Sol skippering a Fairline 50,
including jollies from Estepona to Africa in the company of Dolphins, getting merry every night
buying rugs in Morocco, then gets to join us in new villa for a week. Hard life this pro skipper lark.
Still I had him working carting up furniture etc.

I can say that Learner (despite is nick) knows very well whats going on in sofrance where I often go: a 10% extra lenght is tolerate but in case you neighbours complain you are kindly request to move to a more appropiate berth unless your tips are higher than your next-berth pal! This is roughly the same in italy.
