If you want to compare speeds, see if there are any in the the Round the Island Race results.

Like all Pelle Peterson boats, she's a good all rounder. We have one locally whose owner reckons approx 6 knts max under power.

Re: MAXI 84 , HOW FAST SHE IS? = FAST!!!

At the weekend under plain sail we (2) topped 7.8kts. We covered 40NMs under 6hours average 6.8kts. (no spinnaker or C/C). top wind speed 17kts and 'off the peg' sails.
I've had 9.2kts under sail and surf. I've got 28hp engine with a 3 blade folding prop. 7.2kts flat out but 6.2kts cruising speed.
Solid, spacious family cruiser. Easy to handle single handed, if you set it up right.
She likes around 12-15 kts of wind to get the best out of her, She is a heavy-ish boat at 3.3tons.

Re: MAXI 84 , HOW FAST SHE IS? = FAST!!!

Hi guys, I have owned a Maxi 84 for 17 years - she is an '82 model and now badly in need of some tender loving care to bring her back to the great fun-boat that she really is. The old Volvo engine needs changing - any suggestions? I am intrigued by Viking's 28hp engine - doesn't such a large engine mean additional weight when it comes to sailing? what make of engine (and model) did you choose?
Also, can you recommend a good source for parts for the boat - example, my airvents have both disintegrated with age (and sun) and need replacing...etc, etc...
I sail her in Malta and in a force 4 to 6, she still gives the modern boats a good run for their money!!

Hi! My 1982 Maxi 84 has a 17hp volvo penta MD 7B engine - up to 3 seasons ago she was cruising at just over 6 knots (6.5 at full revs). I have a twin blade folding prop.

Hello,
I have the old md7a with the 110s drive.
I changed this year the propeller to a new 15x9 folding.
Nevertheless it seems i cant make any faster than 5 knts.

I am bit dissapointed i expected actually to reach almost hull speed. Any experience from others in this setup??

I replace the MD my maxi had with a Beta 20hp, beta provided parts to allow me to keep the 110 saildrive and also provided the engine bed details.

What prop did you have before, and what speed did you get? 15" sounds rather big for the power that you have and it may be that the engine is not reaching maximum revs. If you can determine what your reduction ratio is (the 110S was made with two alternatives) you can use the Propcalc programme on www.castlemarine.co.uk to calculate prop size.

Before i had a badly worn 14x8. I checked around in volvo forums and in volvo official site and the md7a is suitable for both 14x8 and 15x9.
Anyway the boat speed is more or less the same with both.
The reduction rate is 1:1,66 i guess.
Boat is running at 2300 rpm easily

A 15*9 is a much "bigger" prop than 14*8 and will load the engine much more, resulting in it not achieving full revs. Not sure what maximum revs is on the MD7A but 2300 seems low. You have a heavy boat and limited power so achieving hull speed will not be easy and getting the right prop size to use maximum power from the engine will be critical. It is unlikely that you can achieve much over 5.5 knots with such limited power. Typically boats of that size/weight need a 18-20hp engine to achieve hull speed of around 6.5 knots.

for the md7a max revs are 2500. REcommendation is to run 300 rpm lower.
However as i had the 14x8 earlier and situation was pretty much same i believe to that lack of power is the root cause.
