Last summer, I was varnishing my handrails in the marina in Kinsale. I had masked off one side perfectly when an old friend of mine dropped by and dragged me off kicking off to the pub. By the time I was rescued and recovered from my ordeal in the pub, the masking tape had been on longer than 24 hours. I have now got most of it off using a power washer but there is still some sticky residue. Any hints on how to remove the rest of the residue?

Assuming the problem is on a piece of GRP, use a razor blade to remove the major part of the mess, and then wipe over carefully witha cloth lightly impregnated with acetone, making sure you dont touch the varnish.

If the surface has been painted, use meths

Apply hot air gun wafting over it to soften ... without 'cooking paint' ....... OR

apply new masking tape over top and warm with said hot-air gun and pull away as you work along the tape .... the old gunge should lift away with the tape.

Any tape left longer than necessary can be removed using this trick.

Another is where you have a Car Park sticker leave gunge inside windscreen ..... repeated re-attach of sticker over the gunge with a new area of sticker adhesive lifts it away ....

As a sprayer by trade, we encounter this from time to time.
I find Panel Wipe or Thinners the best way to remove the glue, but try a small area first to make sure the surface is not going to lift. Panel Wipe can be purchased from any good Motor Factors

We use Brasso to remove tape glue residue at work. There seems to be something in the solvent that dissolves the adhesive. We find it remarkably effective.

White spirit.
For future, you can now masking tapes with adhesives that are specifically designed to be removable for up to, I think, 48 hours. They do work. I got it in my local B&Q and I think it was 'Duck' brand. Blue in colour.

Any light oil--lamp oil, vegetable oil, mineral oil, baby oil--will dissolve adhesive. Spray it on, wait 5-10 minutes, use a plastic kitchen scrubber...wash thoroughly with detergent and water.

I too have discovered the delights of the Blue Masking Tape. Very expensive, when compared to the convetional stuff, but worth every penny. The ones I have used are made by 3M.

Sticky Stuff Remover

I have found a product called 'Sticky Stuff Remover' made by Mycal to be very good at removing the adhesive of most sticky labels. It is a citrus based product and can be used on plastics without any harm. You can buy it from Lakeland Ltd see http://www.lakelandlimited.com; the product number is 8976. It costs about £4 but postage is on top of this (orders over £38 are postage free). Lakeland sell all sorts of useful kitchen and domestic products; their Micro Klippits for securing plastic bags are in constant use in our house and onboard the boat.

Re: Sticky Stuff Remover

I look at it this way: why spend money on a product that you're never likely to use even 10% of, when you already have at least one or two of 5 things (lamp oil, baby oil, vegetable oil, olive oil, and--if it's sold in the UK--good ol' WD-40) that work as well or better than anything specifically marketed for the purpose? :)

Have found that many tape adhesives are 'spread' by domestic cleaners / oils - real solvent is necessary and problem is identfying the real solvent for the product ....

I normally revert to the hot-air gun and tape on top to lift it off ..... works without all the hassle.
