You can buy some little coloured markers which fit intothe chain links - but heavens only knows where. They were featured in a sailing mag last year, were cheap effective and reportedly efficient. Asked several chandlers ant the boat show - all said they were easily available at a local chandlery, but they're not.

Anyone know of a supplier?

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I want the visible marjkers for the same reasions, I dont trust electronics, but my counter is in the wheel house, I anchor from there, I only have a little waterproof microswitch up at the winch, with cable back through the boat. Its a special winch built for the boat, with 5/8" chain and 120 lb. anchor in hawse pipe. Incidently just had to buy a new motor for it, hard to find and £260 but thats not bad, its given 31 years of service. The winch will live me and another couple of owners out!

That is a substantial anchor rigg! I have an achor of almost the same size 110lbs, but "only" a 10mm HT chain and that is a lot of weight, (I have 100 meters).

Might be quite difficult to find these markers for a 5/8" chain.

Sounds like you have a great windlass with 31 years of service, and the motor sounds like a bargain. I checked the Lofrans spares and my 1500W motor would be over £300, so I hope it will not break.

The motor was a CAV, a fairly standard reversible motor, fitted to lots of things. But I dont think I will get another one, I believe it waqs the last new one left in the country! I will try and get the old one rewound, as a spare, but I dont think I will ever see iit fitted! I have 160 feet of chain, but there again the boat displaces fully loaded 48 tons, so a bit of extra weight doesn't matter much. 330 feet of chain! where are you anchoring, the falklands? I dont know how many watts my motor is, but its a big swine, 18" long and 6" in diameter!

Tried the German web site for those anchor chain markers, but what is the German word for search. Couldn't find a search button, in order to fill in the number you gave.

Would be interested to know if anyone comes up with a U.K. supplier.

Mica

There is a field in the upper right corner saying: Produkt Suche, which means product search. You can put in the word "markierung" which means marker or the article number from my previous message.

Have searched around but couldn't find it on any other site I know. Can't remember who makes them, there was something written on the pcardboard that goes around the plastic bag. But these are gone.

They have them for either 8mm or 10mm chain, which should go also with 5/16" and 3/8" chain respectively.

Let me know if I can help you. I'd be happy to call them and see that they ship it to you.

Re: Chain Markers: Found it!!

Found the website, viewed the Chain Rainbow, and yes they do have a U.K. address on the site. I have sent them an email asking how much and if they do mail order.

Will let you know if I get a reply, in case anyone else is interested.

MICA
