Mariner Service Manual

Poped the serial number into the second website, found age to be 1989 and then put this info into first website and found the exact owners manual. Exploded diagrams on other website were very helpful but the number of unavailable parts were a bit worrying.

Didn't find a workshop manual but with hindsight the owners manual was enough.

Thats one of the few advantages of Seagull - that and corrosion.

Best thing to do with a Jap OB of that age is to ebay it or boat jumble it. Trying to keep it up to scratch will be pushing water uphill

I accept that as a general statement but I know the history of this engine and it has only done a couple of hundred hours, if that, and you can eat your dinner of the engine. However, as it has been used as an auxillary spare on a sailing boat the paint will be flaking shortly in a few places. Just the time for a strip down, service, touch up a few areas and ready for another twenty years!

My 3 hp Mariner of about the same vintage expired through corrosion - you'll find that the wall thickness of the cylinder head castings isnt great.

One issue I found was that the impellor ran inside a pressed stainless steel cup which sat in an ally casting. As time went on, salt and corrosion products squeezed the stainless cup causing the pump to bind and the engine to be very difficult to start. The cure was a new cup bedded into Duralac.

very reliable engine - just corroded.

I have an old copy of Sailing Today which has an article about servicing a 2-stroke outboard and it covers your actual engine - same as mine.
If you let me have your address I will post the article to you.
I found mine in a skip at the local dump! It was seazed and had obviously been for a swim but I stripped it and reassembled - started second pull and still going strong!! :)
The Tohatsu 4 is the same engine I think.
