My 2001 mariner 90hp four stroke, carburettor outboard has become a non starter and Tacho has stopped reading even though engine cranks. The manuals i've found list the tacho signal wired to an extra
green/white wire from reg/rectifier.My engine is an OT serial no. and grey tacho wire from loom connects to green wire which dissapears into Stator/charging coils area under flywheel.Trying to find any info
on this setup to try and ascertain that starting and tacho fault stems from same source.Have seen a tachometer module mentioned but picture doesn't seem to show long green signal wire,Been through usual
tests with reg/rec/ign.switch/powers/grounds etc. Sent CDI unit off for testing, awaiting reply.any help with diagram/info would be appreciated, many thanks

I'm not sure that the tacho on my Honda 30 'works' when the engine is being cranked over, as the revs are to low for the tacho to respond.

The voltage rectifier/regulator often has a rev counter wire thats not used as the rev counter picks up its signal from elsewhere.. i have a 2002 mariner 50 thats wired like this. I couldnt tell you where it comes from though.

Sounds like an alternator fault the Tacho will be supplied from the ac side of the rectifier. Not sure if you have a separate ignition coil re the non starting. Would have thought there would be. Possibly a common "Ground" ( earth). Just flying kites but maybe helpful.
PS On the 75 HP it looks like all electrics including ignition come from the alt.

i'll try a 50 wiring diagram out.
Mine is fuel injected 4 cylinder so it may have a totally different wiring system. The local outboard centre keep telling me it can't be injection because that didnt arrive on my model until 2006 ? My engine came from sweden when new.
I had probs with rectifier/reg and didnt want to remortgage to buy a genuine when i could get a chinese clone for £15. Didnt work, neither did the next 3 more expensive each time work.
Contacted SSI marine who ive always found to be great on prices, very knowledgeable and also sell quality aftermarket parts. Their reg/rec was £50 but made in spain. Works as it should ! It was ssi who told me many engines dont use the reg/rec tacho wire.
All my dials are wired direct from the wiring loom.

many thanks,it has twin ign coils but CDI wasn't triggering them.I've sent CDI away for testing, there was a suspicious raised spot in
the sealent gel,as if a component may have blown, still waiting on reply about that.I've since got hold of a different manual, specific to
the carbed engines,i'll do a re-check of the sensors/stator etc.My 'Silver Cover' engine seems to be different to the manuals.

many thanks,i've since been able to get a specific manual for the carbed 90hp,but that shows differences to my 'Silver Cover' engine!
Have tried a new reg/rec from SSI,it didn't cure fault but did confirm resistance checks matched one on our engine.I'll run through tests
again with latest manual.Still waiting on reply about CDI unit as well !

Have you done resistance checks on the stator unit to check if it's functioning properly ?

thanks, resistances tested fine according to manual and no shorts to ground, voltage check did seem low, which i will re-test.This was
cranking with recent new battery, freshly charged.Because the signal for tacho is wired to under flywheel i'm trying to prove if
loss of tacho is linked to fault
