Marina fees

You would have thought that a company that made £5.5m profit in its last published financial year on a £38m turnover / £120m balance sheet could afford to do what Dean & Reddyhoff are doing and meet berth holders halfway with a 50% credit against future marina costs. For comparison, Dean & Reddyhoff have under £3m profit on £9m turnover / £16m balance sheet. +

After all, the spend will all still be on marina services or against next year berthing cost (which no doubt will increase by a % anyway)......for the goodwill it would create I think D&R rather than MDL are making the better choice here. But maybe MDL feel secure that their berth holders will not leave......

thats often the problen...the more they have the less likely they are to do anything, it’s all about the money with MDL and no flexibility in any way, I had a berth with them for about 15 years but next time round would try elsewhere first as I would say some of their marinas aren’t anywhere near the standard of their competitors and they could really do with some investment.

Good grief :(
Not sure what’s happening with the rebranding. Everything being issued still has the D+R branding including the website. Also just realised I haven’t had this year’s berth holder’s pack but I guess that’s been held back due to the lockdown.

MDL all borrowed money....interest to pay. ?

LYH is beautiful today , you can hear a pin drop , there isn’t a breath of wind .

Funny thing is a was questioned by Border Force Patrol Lady , asking me what I saw doing there , just at the time I was pouring 44 litres oil oil and old filters into the skip .

she asked me if I’d seen any unusual activity on the river as the weather is so calm they were expecting arrivals from France .
i said I think you would be better off 150 miles East of here as they are coming in bigger numbers, she had no idea what I was talking about , I said the 53 you picked up over the weekend , ah she said I’m from Poole Port , we don’t see that many .

she said if you see anything please email us straight away , I said don’t you have a phone number , apparently only emails get answered .

A number of organisations aren't manning the phones, or not to the extent that they normally do, but emails can be responded to by home workers. (Yes I know phones can be redirected to home numbers but I suspect that is not something CS IT orgs are set up to do and does give other issues.)

She was probably flabberghasted to see you tipping 44 litres of oil into the skip

I appreciate this current situation is dire for every living soul in the UK and indeed the world, boat owner's problems are a mere trifle as issues go. However the impact was immediate and unexpected, so none of us were able to plan either personally or financially. The government, like them or loath them are doing what they can. In my business which I have run for over 6 years we plan based on previous years trends and indeed the most recent impact that Brexit was to have. That said, at the end of our financial year we have enough to pay our Corp. tax and Vat as normal plus some in reserve for the next couple of months. Reasonable planning I would think. There is no get out for the tax man so we cannot use this money to keep afloat as all that is offer is delayed payment. In a previous business as a boat owner I sold my previous boat when things look dodgy, then once settled bought another one, again trying to stay in control of my destiny. This current situation as I said is different, immediate and unexpected.

Whilst I expect some formulites to say as boat owners we have to put up and shut up as we are a privileged few, and to a point I agree, however mine is a small 20 ft. boat and as mentioned in other posts, this is my preferred indulgence instead of a holiday each year. I hope there are some who are can see this view.
So in reaction to my marina’s various PR emails but with no real offer of assistance I am going to see what they say.
I have just renewed my contract 1st April (the fool’s day indeed!). I only have a small boat so fees are not huge, but considerable at this time. Unfortunately my business had gone overnight to a zero income due to the virus crisis, as a Company Director no help for me anywhere. Anyway that aside, I am considering cancelling my DDM as I pay monthly and asking the Marina to waive fees for two months (minimum) as (a) I have more important household bills to pay and (b) ask them consider to berth holders who are struggling as a gesture of goodwill and loyalty.
Despite Premier being owned by Welcome Trust and the CEO’s PR exercise in mentioning this in his corporate email their profits are huge (£2.5 million in previous years). If other Premier marina berth holders get together and act as one this would have much more impact that just individual’s email.
Not sure what the Berth holders association’s view is, not even replying to emails on the matter, I know 2/3 people who have sent them email but no response.
Thoughts?

It would be nice to get reduced rate but I can't see it happening unless significant numbers of people give up boating people or take their boats elsewhere (eg storage ashore and not in a boatyard) .

Taking the boat elsewhere , at present, being a challenge in itself.

My marina fees will be due in July. I expect the price to rise compared to last year as it has done every year without fail even through the recession.

I have to say I think premier marina have responded very poorly during this crisis, I have spoken to my manager at my marina via e mail, and he was very tight lipped on what to do, I will see how things go but if I cannot pay I will definitely informed them on how much they will be getting, I find that fact that they have a reduced service but have not reduced their price a poor response from them
