Am of to Malta for a week Oct 10th and am wondering if any forumites could suggest any sailing resource, activity, or contacts at this time of year around Valetta.
Even a tip for a good pub or resturant might do - maybe also local car hire.

Take a look at www.rmyc.org, website of the Royal Malta Yacht Club at Manoel Island, Gzira. Is just across the water from Valetta on the East side. I have arranged a few days racing over the years. There is a club bar which is open to non-members, but its in the old fortress which is being restored, so is difficult to find.
Can't help too much with stuff around Valetta as I always head to the North of the Island. If you want some recommendations for eateries in Mdina, Mellieha, Mgarr send a pm. Valetta itself tends to shut down at night. Most of the action is in Sliema or, even more so, St. Julians.
Car hire is easy. Getting use to the road manners is more of a problem. Bear in mind the car hire offices at the airport are generally shut at 17.00. You should aim to spend around LM8.50 a day for week's hire of an economy model from a local firm, rising to about LM 12 for one day. I can give numbers for a couple of local hire companies.
