Lot of armchair know it alls on here!

I have asked a lot of questions on here over the last few years and have found pretty much all of the advice I've got to be extremely helpful. It is my go to place to get advice and although you can get differing opinions I find it a great source of knowledge.

My armchair is also on my boat (the sailing one that is), but since the boat is only 16ft long, there is only my advice to take (unless someone is shouting at me from another boat..)

There certainly is a wealth of knowledge within these forums, though not all reliable. And a handful of 'experts' won't back down & admit to being wrong if called out for being incorrect. IMHO 2 strikes & straight onto ignore when that happens, otherwise everything they post needs checking on google. Quicker just to ignore. The most reliable posts will have caveats & links etc.
Never used to be this bad , now there a handful posters derailing threads and bickering with anyone who really have a negative overall effect on the forums.

Well it is in fact the advice that matters. I try where possible to suggest alternatives to the general advice. ie every one says buy a new one. I would rather discuss bodging the old. Not that i would want people to follow my advice but just to encourage thinking out side the box. I am a bit dismayed at Whitehorse comments. I think there is a wealth of info available for free. Some is good some is worth what you pay for it. As with all things you must make a judgement. ol'will

Sounds like man after my own heart ..... I can remember when this particular Forum was really Practical Boat Owner and the 'cheque-book' boaters stayed on the 'other forum'.

Anyone remember the PBO booklets that had all sorts of practical ideas ?? Shame they were stopped .... but the Forum was on similar lines .... but not today.

The OP is of course 100% correct.

Nothing is a given except death and taxes. And statistically those are all over the place too ?

But , hey.
It’s an imperfect world and the wind shifts around too .
We sail the best course we can using the navigation available .
Isn’t that why we sail and not sail-by-rote?

Does the OP have a boat?
Does he commit to others ?
Does he or she care to share learnt experience ?
Or profer links to established, sound sources ??
I dunno?

Just be aware there are some very dubious commentators on these forums from people who wouldn’t know a boat from a bathtub! The more complex the question the more doubtful the responses. So any advice suggestions etc double check. Sorry it sounds obvious but when you’re enthusiastic and want a response sometimes you want to hear what you want to hear!Having said that there are also a myriad of obviously knowledgeable members!
Interested to know what prompted this post from you. Have you been "burnt" by taking some bad advice? It seems a strange thing to declare publicly on the forum without any background.

I just love the replies that start something like--
"I do not know but....."
Then go on to give expert advice on the subject.

But one has to admit, there are a few here that do give expert advice- albeit, sometimes, with a touch of pomposity.
One knows they are right ,when a few well known forumites start to argue the opposite.
That is when it gets interesting, because then they have to prove they are right.

I have two armchairs on starboard. Direct to ignore. Do not pass go. Do not collect £200!

I am another who has had plenty of good advice from this forum. And I think it is generous of people to give their time and consideration to posting.

I must also admit to a tendency, if I am (occasionally) trying to answer a query, to think that because I dealt with something in a particular way, that is THE way to deal with it.

Often the most useful threads for me are those that debate back and forth about various options.
