Please can someone help - my boat is fitted with a Lofrans Leopard Windlass for a 10mm chain. How do I find out if the gypsy is for an ISO or a DIN chain ? There are no markings on the gypsy or windlass.
I lost the original chain (and anchor) to something solid in deep water in Greece a few days ago.
After some wire brushing I can see the numerals "10" on the gypsy - but whether it is ISO or DIN is still the problem. The boat was built by Westerly in the UK in 1990, and the windlass comes from Italy. That being so, if I had to guess I would choose DIN; I have a 10mm DIN chain piece and it appears to fit quite snugly. The ISO chain, with a greater inside dimension, the "horizontal" link when on the gypsy would probably be a bit loose ? The outer dimensions are the same.
Any flaws in my reasoning ?
Richard - there is no flaw in your reasoning that I can see, but the info I am working with is commonly published - I am using Vyv Cox's site (https://coxengineering.sharepoint.com/Pages/Chaindefinitions.aspx).
Would be interesting to know how this anomaly came about. Vyv ?
Tranona - I read the manual as specifying both ISO and DIN 10mm ?
Bit confusing as it seems to show 10 ISO and then 3/8" - 10mm DIN 766. according to Vyv's chart the ISO links are longer so a DIN would fit comfortably in an ISO gypsy, but probably not the other way round.
