Bear in mind a lfting keel weighs less than a nomal keel and thus affects sailng perfomance, based on experience.

Depends on the type of lift keel though. For example, Parker 31 will out-sail most fixed keel boats of a similar size. If the keel has some weight to it, preferably right at the bottom, performance won’t suffer.

I have a Southerly 105 and have never had an issue with anything jamming. The keels are massively built and the weight would push anything out. The only point I would make is that when the keel is up, it is kept in place with a pin that takes the weight from the pennants (to stop them stretching) so you will not be able to leave the keel partially down.

And yet some lifting keels outperform their fixed keel counterparts because the keel when fully down is much deeper giving better grip and less leeway to windward in particular - modern Southerly for instance.

We had a Dufour 2800 with a 40 kg lifting centreplate. It jammed when we first had it, but after some advice always gave the blade a few inches 'wriggle' room (as mentioned by another poster). We had no problems for the next 15 yrs on a drying mooring. Present boat 13yrs, lifting keel with bulb 1300kg, no problems.

This is a post that was from 4 months ago by boatmike and was concluded back then. Its been resurrected this month by someone for some reason (probably didn't read the date) but the original poster is not on it anymore. Probably a waste of your time commenting now.
