The 38 was lifted today and she basically came out cleaner than I erxpected.

It was obvious which side had been south ... that side had areas of banricles ....

My speed log .....

and yes she does have TWO speed logs ...

Both encrusted !

I now know why she has water seeping into keel box ..... the plates over the stud ends are weeping ... both sides.

Nice to see that she has hard VC applied - so a scrape of the growth ... power wash and then polish. Just remains to determine best for the various in / outlets etc that are encrusted .. as well as the shaft, p bracket and folding prop.

Now having seen her underneath - confirms what I thought ... very happy !!

Spanish yards including the Canaries use 'hard water' or 26 % solution of hydrochloric acid on propellers etc. Needs care but it works. Always used in houses for drains too and only about a euro a litre.

Not concerned about cleaning ... my thoughts are what to use to stop future growth ...

We noted that after she sat for a while unused - sorting out lights / wiring etc. - that when we ran the engine - there was a bit of movement on the mounts and you could feel slight juddering in the tiller ...
Now she's lifted - we see that one blade of the folder (2 blade) has barnicles while other is virtually clear.

I may get hold of a pot of standard A/F and paint inside the 'in / outlets' ... prop etc.

A long time ago I had a Rival 36 fitted with 2 logs. They led to one box (can't remember the colour :)) and that was a selector switch that decided which log data was fed back to the nav system based on which way the boat was leaning at the time. Inside the box was a simple mercury phial that selected which signal passed through, dependant on heel.

I polished mine using a nylon cup disc (not too abrasive) until very shiny as an experiment.
Boat was left in water far longer than originally planned (approaching 2 years) and didn't move much during the 2nd May in the water.
End result was boats bottom that Barnacle Bill would have been jealous of and hours (and hours and hours!) Of work to sort. However, no significant growth on propellor at all - couple of barnacles around the infill where attached to shaft but nothing on blades.
Not saying it would work everywhere but have gone for polishing mine again (and won't be in water for as long and hopefully circumstances won't conspire to no boat use during peak growing season). Will hopefully get away with using acid solution to clean in future.

In Helsinki (so quite brackish water) I polish my propeller to a shine every Spring, and I never get any growth on it. It might be that the brass polish I use leaves a layer of wax.

Well I'm not the only one who " has water seeping into keel"

About a year ago I gave the underwater section of the hull a an epoxy barrier coat then several coats of black Altex No5 anti fouling. I couldn't understand why the starboard side of the keel was starting to crack but quickly realised the afternoon sun was making the keel red hot and causing the barrier coat to crack. Before launching I sanded off the anti-fouling then epoxied/glass clothed the area then gave it another barrier coat and anti-fouling.

Since then I have had her out of the water and found where I have epoxy/glassed is fine but there is an area where I didn't notice cracks and that is seeping water. Next time it is on the hard I will have to attend to that as I think it looks bad.

sounds like a lot of hydrochloric acid is going into spanish waters, wonder if that is actually 'allowed' as far as waste disposal is concerned

The two logs appear to be connected to the big blue box behind my switch panel .... then a multi-core cable goes to the switch panel where I have two switches ... one is horizontal RED - GREEN ... next is vertical and maybe down position is OFF and up position is ON as it has both Red / Green above it.

The blue box has arrows marked on it for orientation ...

Hull is going to be cleaned by the yard ... I'm stuck for time with work - so easier to pay the small fee and have them do it. Then I can see all through hulls etc.

Already I have found the two through hull Electronic sensors that sit ahead of the logs ... about 1" diameter ... one each side of centreline. But what are they for ??

The centreline 'ducer' we believe is redundant from the old Seafarer dial sounder I removed.

I left it large size so can be seen all items.

Your two switches, at rough guess would be Vertical - Power, Horizontal Port, starboard. You probably have already sussed that. However all the switches have tallies above so Vertical could be down for on. I know teaching Grandmothers and eggs! Just thought I would mention. Looks like you are getting there with all the switches and magic box. Good luck!.

DOWN is OFF ... this is daft EU switching ..... like the houses - switches UP for on .....

The two switches actually didn't do anything when played with !! But we still need to investigate further.

My boat is Swedish made in 1980 and down is on, I have lived in EU since 1972 and all of our switches are up off and down on...

Some of my lighting circuits were overly complicated so that the steaming light would not turn on without the deck level lights. And the masthead nav lights could not work with the steaming light. Might be worth considering if puzzling out the electrics...

Our switches are as I have said. My experience of Europe is as I have said.

If my comments were not of assistance, I have wasted my time. I definitely do not need to go to see upside down switches in the Baltics.😁

Appreciate that. I seem to remember USA being the same, I think  Just do one circuit at a time, we, no matter how experienced, all get caught with starting on one and jumping to another bit then getting underwear knotted!

Not really a problem - hydrochloric acid is hydrogen ions and chloride ions. The former will get neutralised PDQ by carbonates, and the latter is already present in ocean water at high concentrations (sea salt is sodium chloride).

Part of what used to make this place great was that information which was given freely to assist, even if it was not accepted or of assistance was not ridiculed.

I won't be off anywhere.

Not ridiculed ... just do not appreciate snide remarks then try to cover with a smiley.

Your info did not assist anyway ... so ??
