Whilst reading my copy of MBM in the smallest and only place in the house where I do not get disturbed - two things struck me.

1) There was an article about sea-sick bags - ooo thinks me - thats a good idea but I don't get ill and I would guess nobody who owns a boat would either or else they'd sell the boat and buy a tent. So it must be for the kids

2) Why is the steering wheel put on the left (port) side on some boats and on the right (starboard) on others. I may be wrong but is the trend to go on the right side more than the left. I wonder why ??

MBM got me thinking ...........

If it's a right hand drive it's built for UK market.

If it's left hand drive, it's a grey import /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: SoF

SoF = South of France

Quite a few peeps here keep their boats in the Mediterranean, and fly out to them. They prefer the sunshine and more predictable weather to boating in the UK, and it keeps their SWMBO more interested in boating activities

Wimps ;)

but Wimp never !!!!! Went up to Isola on Sunday about 75 mins from Cannes..SNOW on the ground !! Honest.

Let's face it . Better weather, better food, cheaper booze.. so why do you boat in the UK?

As written by someone who doesn't boat anywhere.

Re: SoF

I love it when it's wild, wet and rough.

We had a summer of extremely good weather in the UK, but I had much more fun in the last month when the easterlies kicked up a good hoolie.

Honestly!

Apart from snow, the Med may even get to see the Nothern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in the next day or two, depending on how the huge solar flare hits us, see my other post.

Re: SoF

Good evening Mr Learner, are you still allowed out to play. How is TB? Has she released her grip on your nether regions?

Much more challenging to boat in UK, tides, waves, hypothermia, sexy all over one piece flotation suits, bobble hats, gloves, woolly underwear (I knew that would get your attention!), nice hot mugs of rosie lee.

So why would anyone want to boat in the Med???

Northern Lights are magic. I used to love looking out for them them when I did transatlantics frequently ( by air I should add).

In the UK until Thursday but too much light pollution in London. How far out of town do you need to be?

LJS

Do you realise that the very mention of woolly underwear leaves me.... cold. Would you like your family to be shorn of their natural protection?

Actually been sent back to the UK by TB ; she needs her ironing done and I volunteered, Jeez it's cold here. Nether regions are crated and unused , so no change there.

I take it the scallop beds are now safe for the winter, did Haydn grace the SWest over the weekend? he's blooming quiet this week.

Re: SoF

It all depends on whether the particles hit going 'Northerly' in which case they'll ride up and over the earths magnetic field, giving Scotland, Iceland, Canada, Norway a good display.

If the particles hit 'Southerly', then the Northern Lights will be like none in living memory, and will probably be seen in the Med!. In which case, despite light pollution in London, they will still possibly be visible? Don't know how far out you'd have to go for a good view though.

I've seen them in Scotland, Norway, Iceland, Canada and on transatlantic flights, but this could be the display of all time if everything goes well.

Gonna wreak havoc with systems though. Less powerful solar storms have brought down satellites and power grids before now. If it hits going 'south' there be all sorts of problems. Not dangerous to humans though, before anyone worries - or at least not unless you're flying!! ;)

Re: SoF

Unfortunately all SW scallops are now safe to come out and play, Blue Fisher now in a berth only a few yards away from Muckyfarter waiting to be hauled out on Thursday. First time in over 5 years she'll have been out for a whole winter.

Haydn ensconced on MF, had high tea (drank it on his flybridge!) with him on Sunday, no doubt will be forced to do the route march to the Borringdon Arms tomorrow nite. Last nite on the boat in the water, sob sob!

Re: SoF

Post makes perfect sense until I read that Blue Fisher is berthed only a few yards away from ~Mucky Farter.

Aren't you worried your boat might catch something? Have the Environment Agency been warned that Haydn is about to expose her bottom? I trust he is adding liberal doses of Penicillin to the Antifoul..

Re: SoF

Why out all winter this year?

You'll have cabin fever within weeks!

Learner or I could lend you a sheep or two to keep you amused if things get too much

Well I thought it would give her a well deserved rest. Going to have her bum slurry blasted to get rid of 20 years of accumulated aunty foul.

To be honest, it'll be good to have a change for a few months, no more peering at any available weather forecast for the foreseeable future, maybe get out and do wot normal peeps do rather than rush down to the boat.

Will I miss it? If we have continued good weather then yes! But the consolation is that the hull should be drying nicely before painting next year. And there's always Muckyfarter to play on if I get really desperate!

Didn't realise you're also Welsh, Brendan. Thort you'd be more of a goat man.

Re: Animal farm

Ah, that sounds reasonable. I had the first full weekend at home in months last weekend, and it was actually rather enjoyable. Watched DVD's in front of log fire etc. I'll be out on the boat again shortly though, can't stand winters without anymore

Happy to say that yes, full blown Welshman, born West of Swansea, which is the defining guide, and know every sheep joke known to man kind (learnt as a defensive mechanism). I had a couple of proper Welsh sheep sent down for the weekend, and have to say they are vastly superior to the Berkshire or even Romney Marsh variety, which are a little inbred for my liking.

Say Hi to Haydn!, Are the runaways with him, or is he on his own.?

Tell him that we all feature on Sybarites latest posting count on Scuttlebutt, and that he's in the top 100 ;)

dont know if its quite true, but i was told that in the first days (pre duo-prop for sure)the torque of the single prop on a smaller boat caused the boat to angle slightly to port (as the balancing force), and to counteract this the helm was put on the starboard so that the additional weight would crudely balance this out.

The history behind it is..

Boats aimed at inland waterways have the helm on the left so they can closely judge passing at close quarters.

Boats designed for open waters have the helm on the right as that gives the clearest view of those you should give way to.
