In which case lazy jacks are essential. When dropping the main it stops it flopping down over the deck obstructing the view. Important in confined spaces where one might not have time to secure it.I think it also depends sometimes on the nature of the area you sail in.
Out of my home berth, the water is narrow and often crowded with other boats and it's easy to run out of water as above and having another to give it another go.
