Flann O'Brien, aka Brian O'Nolan, aka Miles na gCopaleen, the great Irish writer, humourist, journalist and all-round genius has a joke somewhere in his work which relies on the pronunciation of 'mhor' with the initial 'm' sound. The substance is that a character decides have his house surrounded by a garden entirely of mown grass. He wishes the house to have a Gaelic name, but can find no word for 'lawn' so he names his house Lawn Mhor. I think if he can eschew the 'v' pronunciation, then so can you.

when the real welsh use the name it comes out at Dullen

but I am much more english than welsh so I roll with the majority

According to various sources Dylan means "great flow or tide" - so probably originally given to someone with no urinary problems or possibly who spouts "a load of pish".

You might like to use a Gaelic lettering style, whatever spelling you choose, perhaps like this.............

mór and mor will both be pronounced like "more".
mhor and mhór will both be pronounced roughly like "vore".
The "r" apparently making the variation from the diacritic over the "o" pretty much irrelevant.

I would avoid strange spellings like the plague. Your radioing and some youngster at the coastguard has to ask how is that spelt, what, can you repeat, is the with a fh or ph? As you sink.

Let alone explaining whether it's a down or up sloping diacritic and how they can enter that into their computer....

Ah, another fan - I don't meet many who share my lifelong passion for that wonderful man :encouragement:

I love all his books, especially An Beal Bhocht - glorious parody of all the "poverty stricken childhood in the islands" books - and the glorious "Best of Myles". The Brother; the Plain People of Ireland; For Steam Men....... etc. etc. etc. As you say - comic genius! Best of Myles is always on the boat and I laugh out loud every time.

Sorry - thread drift - but if anyone doesn't know "Best of Myles" then their life is so much the poorer - but that can soon be put right

My boat's name is Picaro, a Spanish word. Strictly speaking, and indeed on the boat's bow and stern, the 'i'has an accent over it to indicate that this is the stressed syllable. When I spell the name over the radio I don't arse about with this.

You have been mislead. It comes from Tŷ-LAN, or "House with Good Broadband", and therefore translates, loosely, as "Well-connected person".
