is this is not some sort of (sexist) joke, then I thoroughly recommend one of these:

EcoFlow DELTA – The Ultimate Portable Power Station

we used it last summer to run the dehumidifier now and then to dry the cabins and make life generally very pleasant down below. At anchor.
The small portable solar panels and excess PDs accumulated by the windmill was enough to fill up the charge in 2-3 days... and I guess you will get a lot of hair drying with that.

That looks very interesting. Do your real life experiences match up to their claims?

What I’m puzzling over is once you have checked in at say cherbourg why that doesn’t cover the Summer cruise? I understand the day restrictions but as you cast off from cherbourg are yachtsmen really checking out at say 6am in the morning? Just asking as I was last in cherbourg in 2020 but given the timings to the Cap some of this logging out doesn’t seem to work . Maybe you just log out the previous day though in which case the logging out might be the same day as checking in?

I’m afraid the customs people in france I have dealt with in the new regime have no regard for tide tables or marina gate opening hours ..it’s regular office hours period…and checking you out the day before is generally a big no no

edit ..assuming you are leaving France not going on to another French port

So one just checks in at cherbourg when you sign in and pay at the marina office and don’t check out until homeward bound on the return leg to Uk from wherever you depart ?

Thx bathdave that’s set my mind at rest -I guess when we set off to cherburgh all will be revealed but I will have a look at the website in advance. Mrs Ashtead might have found her Irish roots by then though which might remove some of this tedious process as an eu citizen.

WARNING: FRED DRIFT
yes. We tried it extensively last year, and it works exactly as claimed "on the box". Except (of course): I have not tested the durability aspect. We have probably just done ~10 full discharge cycles (not quite to 0% every time).

The important point is that it takes quite a bit to get a full charge (on a small - nominal 120A- solar panel), but they state that in their blurb. I am a definite enthusiast. I actually wonder if (eventually) we may get rid of the gas altogether: I am going to try how it work on a (portable) induction hob. If that works, I will then need to try out how to grill toast (but that is another chapter)

We halved our gas usage last year with an induction hob and little Argos electric kettle. Binned the 34 yr old oven over the winter and replaced with a Ninja air fryer and a gas grill/ hob to mix and match. Its a half way step to going electric.

Anyway, back to the subject of the fred, Lusty if you don't mind pushing a flood tide at Cowes for an hour or so, the ebb will take you all the way into Weymouth bay before it dies out, but at that point the tide is so weak it's not worth worrying about. Stop in Portland or Weymouth for a couple of days and then with a good forecast off to Dartmouth or Lyme Regis and anchor out for a night off the beach. This means inexperienced crew are always in sight of nearby land and it's a very pretty coast too.

Just go where the wind allows you. If the wind is the wrong direction and will change in a day, wait a day.
I did this back in 2019 and had over 4 weeks of enjoyment. Even anchored in the Helford river when the Easterly storm came in meant doing nothing for a day apart from a few minor repairs / upgrades.
Got down to the Scillies a few days after the storm when it was all back to normal.
