A few YouTube channels have recently purchased new yachts (Wynns and a new HH, Tula's a Seawind, Ruby Rose another Seawind? ... ) and they have all done many videos about the "Warranty claims" ... and saying how normal it is to have lots of warranty issues.

Is this a real thing? Do all new boats always have lots of warranty issues?

Doris ... what are your expectations in that regards. I think I recall you mentioning you'd do a shake down cruise, but I also recall you;d be taking her home pretty quickly.

JPK have built lots of 39FC's by now ... surely the process is well travelled with limited problems?

What are you expecting to have issues with and how long will it take to have issues show up?

(the 39FC Photon Infinity had some Autopilot issues and some B&G items were installed with silicone ... not sure of any issues with the 39FC called Cyclops ... both are on YouTube)

There’s only really one guy on these forums with an enormous new boat to suggest how much snagging there is and how it’s dealt with.

I have a very little but new boat.
All looking v good. Am going out next week with the surveyor, builder and designer to try and break a few things. I suspect the guy with the enormous new boat will have more problems than me but WTF do I know. 🤞🤞🤞

Yesterday the sails went up 👍👍
All the systems work. Monsieur JPK suggested a minor tweak, one doesn’t have a dog and bark oneself so that will be done.
Roll on Tuesday for the next sail. 👍👍👍 and two fingers to the odd bay sayer

So it's been 3 weeks now ... how's things going?

It's got to be time for an update?
The boat is now on its home berth.
A bouncy but quick sail from Lorient mostly on the wind tested things out and amazingly very little snagging or damage to report.
It sails exceedingly well with the designer and builder both justifying their reputation. Jean Pierre should be proud, no buyers remorse, yet.
The nay sayer(s) who seemed to think loads goes wrong with new boats may right occasionally, but by no means always.
Pete Sanders’ Contender ZZ Ultra does just what I want, B&G didn’t miss a beat, now to learn how to sail the boat properly.
If anyone wants any serious details maybe a pm.

I've got JPK39 withdrawal symptoms ... what the latest one how she is going?

Done any good trips?

Made any changes?
I’ve been meaning to do a little resumé of the story so far and Numbers has just nudged me.

I definitely consider myself fortunate to have jumped the queue and been able to take delivery of the 39 less than nine months from the initial decision, one that I do not regret one jot. Zero buyers remorse here.

Having put down the deposit and with a rapidly approaching build I consulted with an array of fellow sailors, engineers, journos, posters on here even (Thank you Flaming). That was massively helpful, especially as there wasn’t a 39 locally that I could keep climbing all over to make my mind up on things.

The big ones were:

Keel. I went with the standard 2.15m keel. The lifting keel isn’t designed to take the ground and is grown up wedge, the shallow 1.8m weighs another 500kg for 14 inches less draught, plus is an extra two and a half grand, that’s a lot of negatives!

Two bedrooms or three. That was easy, three, the stb aft cabin has a removable base and cushions in-bord which results in fantastic stowage and still a proper single berth. Can be a full double in seconds. The resulting heads are slightly smaller but still more than adequate.

Permanent or temporary inner forestay. Again an easy one cos I’m not about to race round the cans, a permanent stay with a rolled up staysail has to be the best, especially as when the TWS hits 16kts the staysail is quicker if going uphill. Although the two sails are not designed to be used together, reaching in the mid teens AWS with both sails achieved 14 kts without much effort.

Bow thruster. This was a tricky one. It would have to be a drop down version and eventually on the KISS principle it was rejected. It would go wrong eventually, Sod’s Law means it would be at the worst possible time. Just use fenders and learn how to park is the plan. If I finish up regretting this I might change the two bladed folding prop to a feathering one, thereby giving me some serious brakes, this autumn. The credit for not having the standard prop was pennies.

Power winch. Decided to get one. It will probably be turned off most of the time but when needed, will be invaluable.

Sails. The yard has a close relationship with Incidence in La Rochelle and North. I’m nowhere near rich enough to afford the latter, nice as their sails are, and Incidence would be a long way away and once I had left France I would be irrelevant. Peter Sanders in Lymington stepped up to the plate, was hugely helpful and has done the boat proud. I’ll be going with an A2 and a slightly flatter A6 for the coloured stuff. If I get serious I’ll probably go for some form of furling zero type coloured sail but thats aways down the line.

As regard tweaks, yes there’s an assortment but nothing major. There were a few rigging hiccups but the yard have been a pleasure to deal with. Stuff that was their error I got fixed, sent them the bill and a credit note was instant. No faffing or arguing. Am very appreciative of JP’s input.👍😃

If anyone wants to see the result just get in touch and I’ll be happy to show the boat off. I was down a couple of weeks ago and sitting down below with a cup of tea it was amazing that every person who walked past stopped and had a serious look (its parked stern to).

To me it’s serious boat porn, I do realise that different strokes for different folks applies, but I’m happy. Dealing direct with a French yard is not impossible and actually turned out to be a terrific adventure, just don’t think about the ferry fares. I’m now very familiar with the road to Lorient.

On the subject of Lorient, I have never seen anywhere on this planet that has so many performance sailing boats together. Minis, Figaros, Class 40s, IMOCAs, 50ft Tris, Ultimes plus assorted classless racers. Unbelievable eye candy in La Base.

Now, as Eric and Ernie always said, Just bring me Sunshine.

So an general terms, 15 to 20 knots of True wind and sailing at an apparent wind angle of say 100 degrees, you're easily pushing 14 knots boat speed ...Wow!

Is it an "easy" sail with you sitting back and basking in the glory of your JPK39FC nibbling on some camembert cheese and biscuits and sipping some chilled champaign with the autopilot doing all the work, or do you have to be on helm completely focussed with your crew constantly on adjusting the sheets?

I think you’re confusing me with Flamimg and his lovely crew, and also we don’t use booze until moored up. In a few months time I will have a better idea of the performance/effort ratio but I have to say I’ll be disappointed if we don’t threaten 20kts at some stage this year.
