How are you finding her? Or, have you been weather bound since arrival?

yes - alternative sailing

i've been able to sail a bit - mostly winds under 10kts.., and several days in harbor with it blowing dogs off chains.

This one aboard a 1070+ (just in from the Acores, hence slight disarray). Companionway steps, out of shot, front right, together with drawer unit, providing corners to tuck into.
I had a look at the RM at SIBS, and was hugely relieved.
A year - 18months ago I tried to talk to RM about their 11.80, which looked terrific on paper and pics. It proved impossible to make contact with them. They ignored both phones and emails, mind you after the way previous buyers had been treated through their financial ‘hiccup’ did rather incline me to scepticism.
At SIBS, on board the 11.80 I found it to be a bit of a tub. Reminded me rather of the older generation Oceanis range. I was very concerned that I might see it and think ‘merde alors’ i shouldn’t have got the JPK. I’m now delighted to say that I think the reality of the JPK is wonderful in total contrast to the RM 😁😁. No buyers remorse here👍.
Others may see it differently but happily, I don’t.

The RM was very high on my list. They look beautiful. Their specs are good on paper. (the question is do these specs convert to real life performance, or is it just good PR?)

I did come across a video of an RM a few years old, with the headlining falling down ... was looking a bit worse for wear. Although I understand it could be the owners fault for not maintaining it right, but it wasn't a good look and put me off.

I also know a number of yacht brands (X-Yachts, Arcona) have a steel matrix, but the RM having that lump of Steel its hull really put me off. I assume it adds a lot of strength to its plywood frame, but all I see is the possibility of massive rust problems in years to come.

Really glad that Doris is happy with the JPK choice (y)

Are there any more decisions to be made, or is it now just a matter of waiting?

I'd worry about that huge window forward of the mast on the RM.
I can see it wouldn’t be fun to stand on while working forward of the mast, but has one ever been known to fail - if that is your concern? RM seem to big it up in their promotional material as a key benefit of their boats and are happy with the engineering.

I’m sure something tricky will come up on Monday week when I’m next there but I’m not sure what.
At the moment the plan is to bring it back mid November but that’s the only serious decision left, November or the Spring.
Deffo not Martinique as has been suggested, much as I like the French WI, Guadeloupe in particular!

As far as I can tell, the JPK's forward window is smaller than the RM's. Apart from being horribly slippery, I'd be wary of riding out heavy weather, hove-to, which is one of my prefered tactics. It must be weaker than the surrounding structure, like the craze for enormous windows in the topsides ala the latest Oysters.

I have to say I’m not convinced about heaving to with this sort of design. I suspect there are better ways to sail out of trouble.
Also given the speed of these boats and modern forecasting to get caught in those sort of survival conditions might be considered careless.
We’re I to be going into the Southern Ocean I have little doubt that JPK could tweak things a tad if i asked, but I’m not sure it would be necessary.
I’ll let you know next year.

I saw a JPK 39 in person for the first time just a few days ago in Port Haliguen.

It really is a great looking boat!

Thanks for the reminder, not! 🤞🤞☺️😊😊 panic just around the corner! Indeed things progress at a rate of knots.

Splash probably in ten days or so, I’m awaiting to hear an exact date in a few days. I was there last week and I’m still impressed with the whole ethos at JPK. Went down to Lymington to see Chris Sanders, at Sanders Sails, last Friday. The main, Genoa and Solent are all ready and about to go out to the yard, and looking terrific. Sail fabric is such a dark art and every sailmaker uses different stuff and I have experienced an insane level of bullsh1t in the past from a couple of the big names. Sanders have a great name and reputation and I have to say they have lived up to it very well, been hugely and sensibly, helpful. Should anyone be looking to go down this route Sanders now have all the measurements for a 39FC. (And Chris loved the boat, always encouraging when a professional says all the right things)

Irritatingly there are a few days at the front of November that I have to be in the UK for business which is complicating matters. Current plan is to give the yard a few days for sorting as soon as the boat is launched, then I go out with a car full of kit and have a grown up play, try and break a few things etc etc and then come home. Then back out, getting to Lorient is a bit of a pain but we’ll manage, and bring the boat back end November. I suppose I could leave it out there until spring but I really want my toy here and accessible plus the water will be much colder in the spring, plus equinoxal storms etc. A couple of long nights at sea will be good for the soul!
Who knows, once I know definite dates I might even come begging here for some help sailing it home. We’re it summer I would love to sail home solo but late autumn, that’s probably a tad dumb

The cloth we have used is Contender ZZ Ultra with weights of 345/245 both used on all sails at different areas as needed.
This was after much thought with Sanders. It’s white, not graphite or carbon looking. This is a cruising boat but the sails will be quick 🤞👍😁, keep their shape and last.
