Had a rather interesting below decks chat last week in a tad lumpy sea. It was the other persons intro to the delights of longer distance sailing.

The subject of getting out of bed, putting wet foulies on and going on watch in the middle of the night is not quite 'are you having fun yet?' in happiness.

So we hatched the idea of a Joy List when we finally took over and the agreed outcome put:

Getting out of bed and putting wet foulies on and going on watch whilst beating to windward in the middle of the night

Just a few minor steps above

Stabbing yourself in the face with a pencil.

What is on your Joy List, but not very near the top, when sailing?

Popping out onto the deck and catching my knee on the sheet winch.

Watching a wave slowly approach from abeam before altering its course to near vertical and apparently about to go into orbit before spotting yours truly sitting at the helm and making a perfect landing inside my collar.

How about getting up in the middle of the night to go on watch, before putting on wellies and oilies(because we are beating to windward in a 5-6 and had been for the last few days) I take a trip to the heads only to get wet feet from the wee and water than has sloshed out of the bowl and onto the floor. Nice wet socks, just the wakeup call you need at 2am.

It was at that point I started doing #1's into a milk bottle in the cockpit – much easier at sea. Low freeboard means you can wash the bottle while sitting in the cockpit.

Also:

Advising everyone to always wear shoes on deck cos a stubbed toe really hurts then going on deck barefoot and stubbing your toe.
