My friend has gone through 3 grinders, 2 drills and a sander all of which are being used in the boatyard on a 50 meter extension cable.
The comutators all just blow to bits, this is on makes from bosch to cheap power devil ones.
The last grinder went whilst we were monitoring the voltage via a multimeter wired to the extension reel and the voltage droped down to 170 volts !. 10 seconds later there was smoke coming from the grinder !
And i forgot to mention the mouse sanders of which 3 have blown !

this is over three years

Thanks to all who have replied. I have just found my receipt, paid £35.99 on 16/12/02. Price now £49.99. Now that is what you call inflation. Model appears to be same spec, but different coloured case.
Steve 28, you have confirmed what I thought might have happen re power drop. I guess now I know but think power drop problems should have been mentioned in the user handbook, because then I would have been as careful as I will be in future.

For JCB you could read Power Devil or any number of other cheapo power? tool makes. They are cheap crap and you can't expect them to stand up to trade or industrial type use. If you use a tool once every six months for a few minutes they are adequate for your needs, however if you are going to give it serious welly, spend the money and get something of professional quality. All this IMHO as a tradesman and heavy user of power tools.

The Final result

Took the grinder back to argos. Told a very pleasant lady
" I bought this here and have used it twice previously but when I tried to use it last week smoke started pouring out of it"
"Did you want a non-smoker" the lady asked
"Ideally yes", I said," because I cannot see what I am doing when I am useing it"
Result was that model had been discontinued but I paid £14 extra to get a 2200 watt model that was much lighter and comes with a 2 year guarentee.
Cannot fault Argos for there no-quibble attitude.
