It\'s a boat Jim, but not as we know it

Toodling up the river from Lowestoft this morning past all the big ships, we came across this boat moored up at one of the docks.

(Don't know if this piccie is going to work though)

It's big, at a guess at least 250 ft long and the stern was totally open as if it was for storage of something pretty bulky.

So anyone know what it is and what it's used for or actually seen it at sea?

Sun Coast reckoned it's the tender for all Happy\Grumpy's safety gear.

Re: It\'s a boat Jim, but not as we know it

I have the dubious pleasure of seeing this quite often when at home. I believe it is Russian built, but never used for purpose. it has what looks like a huge jet engine intake/outlet on one end. Don't know too much about it though. I'll ask around. It's been moored at Shell lowestoft for age now and has become a bit of a feature in an otherwise featurless harbour.

well you're dead right there. It is a bit of a featureless place Lowestoft isn't it. Must say though how friendly the locals are.

You said

< believe it is Russian built, but never used for purpose>

<So what was it's original purpose then?

Excuse me I got in the Sh.t for talking nonsense on here (although I still maintain it was all relevant), does that mean the mafia are exempt? /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

It's been sold before but it's still there as it fell through.

serious answer

Wild guess but it may be one of the new Airbus ships. Airbuses are made in loads of places, wings in UK, fuselage in France, cockpit Germany, some bits in Cadiz Spain. Up till now, the bits have been airlifted in those massive cargo planes to Toulouse, for final asssembly. But the pieces of the new super double decker jumbo are too big so they will be transported to W coast of france by sea, then the last leg to Toulouse will be by road. Airbus have had one or more special ships in build over the last couple of years to transport the bits, and it/they are being delivered around about now. The first mega jumbo will start assembly soon and first test flight 2005. In service 2006 Singapore Airlines. So, at a guess this might be that ship? Dunno what it was doing in Lowestoft, lost mebbe?

Not 100% but the consensus is that it was built as an unmanned frigate for some reason.(not sure what) Latest is that someone has the idea to turn it into a huge floating nightclub type deal. Probably not in Lowestoft though.

Hey, I'm not one of the mafia. I am no where even near my 1000th post let alone past 3000. You will note that this is my first jibe because when we met I thought you were a nice guy and not at all Grumpy. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: serious answer

Hmm seems reasonable re the Airbus angle. Only thing is there's no bridge that we could see, so not sure if it's towed or self propelled though HOO says it looks like it's got jets in it. Also can't see where its helmed from. And no aerials of any description on it wither.

Actually thinking about the Airbus angle, if I remember rightly, bits of the fuselage are made in Hamburg, wings of course at Chester, other bits of the fuselage in Spain, and final assembly is in Toulouse. So Hamburg round the N Sea, through Biscay to the Gib then up to what Marseille (?) then on by roady to Toulouse, would be a heck of a journey, especially if it's being towed all the way.

Still best answer so far jfm. Keep thinking though 'cos I'm not 100% convinced

Here's another pic or you can see a bigger version on BoatOne's website.

Re: serious answer

The story that I was told was that it was a Russian stealth spy ship. All surfaces are rounded so cannot be detected by radar.

Re: serious answer

It's definitely of Russian origin Lyn. I believe it was meant to be an unmanned stealth frigate for them to test out detection systems.

Re: serious answer

Thanks for that Lin. Not sure if stealth technology applies to ships, though seeing all the ships that keep hitting the Tricolour, maybe it does.

Oh and nice to meet you this morning and loved your new boat. If you need anyone to deliver it to Horning let me know, though the trip may be via Lowestoft and Gt Yarmouth to see what it'll do on the sea.
