Goodmorning all
I have read a few times that the Italians are bringing in a tax on boats per day, also for visiting boats!
Did this tax ever come into being?

I rather think Portofino answered a question that wasn't asked. The OP was concerned about the daily tax, not general tax evasion by the rich.

I passed through southern Italy last summer and saw neither hide nor hair of any such tax (and didn't give it a second thought, although I'd read about it on these pages some time before).

This isn't detailed but offers some information: http://www.mby.com/news/530939/italy-scraps-plans-for-daily-bething-tax-on-foreigners

Macd has got it right. The tax is an annual tax (a wealth tax in fact) which hits boats used by Italian tax residents wherever the boats are lying. Details on http://jimbsail.info/italy - and a link at the bottom of the page tells you the legal references.

Medberths loves to hype up sob stories about difficult life is for owners of large vessels. Having to pay tax, indeed . . .

They were talking about a length tax ( under 10 m exempt) for all boats even foreign to them / day
But they dropped it . I guess too much add on costs to collect/ admin and scare off visitors = kill off marine industry etc argument .
So as the article implies they have gone for a " Audit" of Italiens who seem to be deemed rich ie boat owner s and indeed certain car marque owner s and cross refferencing ownership to tax returns .
This I think is/ was deemed less bureaucratic ( even for IT) and presumably less open to corruption ?
There's no point collecting € 1 tax if it costs € 1.2 to do it .
I did notice an unusually large no of IT flagged boats in the S oF last season just a hint something's up

Last time we visited IT marina fee,s were 2-3 x SoF maybe more eg in Rapillo we paid € 130 for a night
While in the Porqueroles € 40 ish
Kinda puts one off given a choise - so the IT economy has lost out -they need to stimulate/ attract boaters .
