Rafting up outside other boarts is standard practice with warps LED TO SHORE - If someone ties their boat to mine WITHOUT PERMISSION I am free to untie/cut warps to save damage to my boat and tough on the inconsiderate persons who think they can tie on to my boat without getting permission.

I know of three friends who have suffered with damage to cleats and topsides through people rafting onto them without permission and not one offered to pay for the damage caused. If you dont like it dont raft onto my boat - you have been warned. You dont know the name of the boat ?? Now decide how much you want to risk tying on to a strange yacht.

We always offer to put lines ashore - and usually do. However if in some misguided act you cut my lines I will sue you for criminal damage. Its polite to ask permission to come alongside someone, but you have to have a VERY good reason to say no. Its quite reasonable to ask for the boat to put shore lines out. It is not reasonable to cut someones lines.

I trust that you are posting tongue in cheek...

In this case it seems the other guy was in the wrong on a couple of counts. No damage was done to you other than loss of a little "beauty sleep"*. Either shrug your shoulders and get on with life or, if you think it might serve a purpose, report him to the harbourmaster and then get on with life.

As others have said, we go sailing for fun and friendship, not to make enemies. Come aboard and join us!

The reason I started this was to find out the feelings of others on whether I was "right" to: have the hump, feel disappointed, confused etc.

I don't feel angry, I'm not jumping up and down with rage screaming at my computer, and I'm not loosing any sleep over it - except the obvious :D I don't feel any malice towards my neighbour, and I'm not after retribution, I'm not going to name and blame, drop them in it, grass them up etc.

As I've said before I'll happily raft and be rafted against in the places where rafting is allowed and expected. Rafting on the outer arm of the walk ashore isn't allowed AFAIK, so it came as a bit of a surprise to be rafted against. I was just curious to find out how others felt about this.

I really didn't think it would cause that much fuss TBH

* I guess this thread will do more damage (to your reputation) than the original incident!
I don't think so, I think Snooks original post was meant to start a discussion and to do that he had to put himself in the position of playing bad boy. My perception of Snooks from his other posts is he's an ok bloke out for a spot of grumpy mischief! He's certainly achieved a lively exchange of views and 100 post thread count - result!!

I enjoyed reading this thread, apart from one troll poster (possibly more, who knows?) it was contencious (sp) without much acrimony - good read!

Cheers, Brian.

Its been quite a good discussion and has raised a number of points so I wouldn't call it a fuss. I've quite enjoyed reading people's views.

This has to be the most extraordinary thread I have read in years.

The attitudes of a significant number of posters is at best antisocial, at worst criminal. Snooks paid for a product. This included not being rafted upon. He was not on the cheap pontoon. The indignant squeals of most posters when they are given a short pint in the pub would be deafening.....Snooks did not get what he paid for. The 'rafter' could have easily moored on the fuel pontoon or the landing quay. The stupid arrogance thinking he could just tie up anywhere was simply unnecessary.

Leaving without paying is 'Theft of services' and a crime, plain and simple.

I hope that IPC is collecting the declarations of criminal damage, just in case they are not trolls, for future evidential use.

But then again, maybe Von Thadden is back. That would be marvellous!

Do you think YBW staff get paid incentives to post threads on here designed to increase views and generate content for their comics?

Now that you know have you changed your views?

I've enjoyed the discussion, although I do feel that I might have been taken too seriously, and my feelings exaggerated and taken somewhat out of context. For example I don't have a problem rafting up, I'm not against the rafting. We've met and been helped out by a yacht we were rafted against in Pontrieux, without whom our cruise could have so easily turned into a crisis. I like rafting :D

Most of my sailing has been done in less crowded places, I grew up sailing round Cornwall, I've chartered in Ireland, Greece, Seychelles, Canaries, Canada etc. remote places far from the crowds. So I guess I'm still very much in the transition period of adapting to "Solent/crowd" mode.

I didn't start this thread to provide content for YM, I did it out of personal curiosity. I still wouldn't do what was done to us, because of the consensus of the forum, but it good to hear other points of view.

I'll still do what I believe to be right, even though others may happily do the opposite. Everyone is different and has different ways of doing things. We all sail different boats for different reasons and it's good to get a different outlook on a situation.

Fair winds

I belive you do have the right, through long established maritime custom.

You also, therefore, have an obligation to lie alongside in a manner that will not cause damage. In my experience, such damage is extremely rare.....in fact, I can't recall of any incident that I know of through first hand knowledge.

If a larger boat wants to lie outside me, and I'm not happy about it, it's usually no problem for me to move out, let him have the inside, then go longside him. No need to refuse permission.

Some people here seem to be paranoid that others are out to deliberately damage their boats. How on earth do they ever relax?

Perhaps the only right is common courtesy, but I distinctly remember being taught that you had to ask permission, which is my default position. If I raft up and no one is there someone remains on board who can get me the skipper back, if there was an issue with the boat. Boats are always welcome alongside me. In over 25 years of sailing, 9 years professionally on yachts, I have never had damage caused by someone along side. I have frequently moved outside of the raft as well to allow bigger boats alongside, I have been away and found umpteen boats outside me when there was none before. I have even put to sea rather than put up with excessive rafting.

If some one leaves a dredging barge along side and a protrusion is poking into my hull threatening the hulls integrity - I would have to take significant action. As I said that is not a likely scenario.

No paranoia here and plenty of relaxing going on.

The problem I think is that instant information is removing peoples ability to think for themselves. There are a number of posts on logs, tides, weather which makes me come to this conclusion. I am new to this forum malarky and I am having a great time discovering loads of stuff.

There's certainly a lot more chaff than wheat around in the world of forums* and blogs. I'm not convinced that it's interfering with people's ability to think for themselves. Compare the range of informed opinion, experience and knowledge that's on offer in serious threads with what is published in magazines, which although often good is nonetheless just one point of view.

As for the cyberspace sailing experts, what did they do before the internet came along? Think for themselves any more than they do now? Umm.

*Note for pedants like myself: for "forums" read "fora".

We agree strongly on all these points!!

I've only read a third of the thread and now given up so apols if this point has been made - on the walk ashore pontoon where you were, no rafting is allowed or instructed by the Berthing Master, which is one of the priveleges of paying the extra fee.

so yes you are right to feel a little hard done by, IMO.

Well, I think you'r both a couple of old aunties.
I went into Yarmouth on two occassions in the past 5 years to hole up late at night, to go out at crack of sparrows to catch the tide.
If these blokes were having a drunken do into the early hours then I would be on your side, but come on, are you that past it that all you can do is moan about others who are getting on with it......?
Blimey, I thought I was a practising miserable old git at times especially when it comes to mobos, but you lot who are precious about this must have a great deal of fun when you'r out for a weeks sail????
Perhaps you should do similar as Libby purvis suggests us long keelers should do related to our manoeuverabilty and put a big sign on your boats saying 'miserable old gits-stay away!'??
