My Perkins 4-107 looks like a lump of rust ... is old as Noahs ark .... lazy starter after winter - usually needs a bit of Ether to help it .. but once that first start is done - she starts on the button all season ... purrs like a contented cat and I'd trust it crossing oceans.
What is the problem with a 30yr old engine ??

30+ yr old Evinrude 18hp Fast Twin - runs a treat
30+yr old Johnson 5hp Twin - runs a treat
20yr old Mariner 20hp - runs a treat
2hp + 3hp Mariner and Johnson about 15yr old each - both run a treat
OK - I do give them a treat now and then by giving to local guy who services ... but that's only when they get a bit lazy on starting after long storage ...

Sold my Westerly last year, built in 1980, original engine, ran like a watch.
Current boat is 35 years old, original engines, as good as new.
That said, we don't know what engine the OP is looking at.

I have long suspected that the world of multihulls is a little different. The UK importer of Dragonfly tris, Al Wood, of Multihull Promotions, I could almost call a friend, even though we’ve never bought a boat from him. Other multihull builders and brokers, invariably friendly, no matter how great. We were ’converted’ by Reg White himself, a builder and broker as well as Olympic gold medallist, and was it 7 times winner of the Lttle Americas Cup in the C class cats. A friendlier bloke you couldn’t hope to meet.
2 x Yam 150 2 stroke. I kick them every spring, whether they need it or not. We’ve recently retired our 1978 Yamaha 2 stroke 2hp tender motor and gone electric. With the money we saved by not upgrading that in our 30 years of ownership. Old isn’t always knackered.

True ... my pal with his B31 has his Yanmar in bits !! When he bought the boat ... at significantly marked down price .. the engine ran but it needed TLC to start. I reckoned it just needed a good clean out and hard run ... but he decided to strip it down ... now its a non runner !!
He sees my older rusty lump work and often says - wish mine ran like that ..... as I say to him ... good dose of this and that ... give it stick every now and then ... and I don't fix what isn't broken ....
Its had its moments ... had 2 starter solenoids (old Land Rover ones are perfect) ... starter motor been refurb'd ..... replaced core plugs twice ... that's it in over 20yrs ownership ... I change oil when I remember to ... each winter as its raw cooled - I run A/freeze through system with seacock closed .... and wait for next season.
I know if I was to sell the boat - somebody would try to get price down for that engine ... but I would just press the button and say - lets go for a run ...
