i can’t help you so much on the case but Navionics always is a good bet plus a tides app that can be used offline such as the Imray one.

do you already have some electronics on your boat you would want to integrate with the iPad?

Is it a cellular iPad? They are the only ones with in built GPS. There are other options for giving a non cellular iPad a gps signal

I use an android tablet, with the navionics charts, integrated with the raymarine electronic set up, using raycontrol, rayview and rayremote apps,
allows me to plan routes at home transfer them to the chart plotter, control the mfd' s, radar, all from the tablet or phone.

I dont think that anything like that works with Garmin

What model is the Garmin? Is it using a basic NMEA backbone to connect to the depthsounder? What type of boating do you do?

For my iPad, I picked up a Catalyst waterproof case off Amazon. You may be able to find something similar if you expect to be taking waves over the side. I haven't looked at any teardowns to see what inherent water resistance might be present, and Apple doesn't assign IPxx ratings to them.

Here are some of the apps I have:
Not all of these may be useful to you. There are apps out there to help recall the ColRegs, various lights, etc, but my habit is to keep such references in PDF form on the tablet. Similarly you may find a first aid reference to be handy, or any local cruising guides or pilot books.

* Unless you already have charts to load or only sail in a rather small area this can get very costly, very quickly. Navionics and iSailor may be more to your liking.
** I prefer this over Navionics, and for you it may be a better all-in-one app, but the pricing model is death by a thousand cuts. Navionics is more basic, but will cost less.

I bought a €30-35 waterproof case on Amazon and it worked fine. There were very limited options when I looked.
I would highly recommend the Scanstrut Rokk Mini range of tablet mounts. They do a tablet mounting kit with a suction cup base, universal joint and tablet holder. Great bit of kit. You can also get screw down clips separately and they are even sturdier. I have a clip at the helm position on my cruiser and another on the console of my rib.

Which is why I choose Raymarine when replacing my nav gear, also gives some control over the auto pilot and of course the hifi system. tablet is a Sony Xperia waterproof, so no case needed and a Sony Aqua phone also waterproof both getting on now but still good. also using a newer Galaxy S7.

For me iNavX has worked well on the Chesapeake Bay, USA and in the Virgin Islands (I use NOAA charts in the US and Navionics in the Caribbean).

I went with ArmourX have had this case for a year now and no leaks so far. As for apps, I’ve got Furuno first watch radar, Navionics, Absolute tides, Windy, and Anchor pro. I’ve also got all the boats engine manuals, electronics manuals and paperwork in pdf format on the iPad.

I’d be interested in a link to that. I discovered when I upgraded to an iPad Pro that it certainly doesn’t work without the internal gps.
Having had a cellular one previously I was persuaded there was no need as I could hook up to iPhone…. Wrong!!

I bought one of these and it’s a great unit Garmin Bluetooth GPS
I tried buying it off Garmin but they took my money and told me it would be 3-4 weeks delivery. I needed it for a trip so Hudson Marine came up trumps

I have a Raymarine E120 which I was going to update but due to shortage of Raymarine products and the fact my existing radar would also need to be changed I may hold fire for now.
