Having been told a roll of Thinsulate sound deadening insulation is £80 a roll, I have been trying to find alternatives. Someone suggested getting some from a builders merchant, as he had found something suitable for a cost of around £12.

I looked in Wicks yesterday, but couldn't find anything foil backed, however I did remember I had a roll of fibreglass in the loft. The only help I've had (given to everyone) is to get a few rolls of fibreglass for loft insulation. So I bought a tube of no nails type glue £2.49 and some foil £2.19 (one free) from the Co Op.

Got the job done yesterday. Of course I was 'expert' by the time I had done it, so not all of it is a mess. A friend was supposed to be coming, however he was on call-out and had to go. Could have done with another pair of hands, however it's now possible to talk, and I can hear the exhaust. When I get a left hand prop, all the whining from the gearbox will go. Still need a loud radio, but it's acceptable.

At another persons suggestion, I'm going to cover it with a bit of chicken mesh, just to make it last a bit longer. It'll soon be noisier again when it has been wet a few times, but should be ok for a year or two.

Malcolm, how did you fit the insulation? Did you adhere the insulation to the inside of the engine compartment (with what?) and then glue the foil around the edges with the no-nails glue? Did you make any attempt to completely encapsulate the fibreglass in a foil envelope? I would appreciate and info you can provide.

Thanks
