From seaward side into Chich, head for Emsworth.
At a safe south Post ( the one I thought you mentioned as been fair game soouth of)
Head NW towards a Bridge and a pub on the right.

There are some swinging boats to starboard, a few red withies ? as marked on my plan.

we had just passed a big red post with " swear deep " on it or something.

Come on Andy, you cant leave it there...........do you consider that as a narrow channel bearing in mind it is where the swingers are .

Swingers /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

ok, depends on the state of tide imo - unless right opposite one of the big red post thingys; in which case narrow indeed.

certainly at 1/2 tide or less it's narrow anyway.

The main Emsworth channel - from the end of the hisc moorings down to the Emsworth swingers isn't narrow - tho you'd think it was when I anchor at the edge and some fool saily type comes outside us soo close we couldn't see his boat name & announces " you're in the channel!". Hmm yes, cuz otherwise we'd be aground.

What constitutes a narrow channel?

I think it is about time there was some clearer definition of a narrow channel. Especially if it is marginal (some would say it is narrow others wouldn't) ... so what is a reasonable definition of narrow?

Chi Harbour office have defined any fairway with swinging moorings to be classed as Narrow and therefore invoking Rule9.
What is the width of the fairway in those locations though? Take the biggest headache - the fairway past Itchenor.

The width through there is generally around 100' (give or take - they are swinging moorings!). Assuming an average boat length of 40' then the(ir) definition of a narrow channel is ~ 2.5 x boat length. Is that reasonable? If you don't think so then explain why.

I'd say it's newcomers in small outboard boats that make the most unorthodox close quarter decisions. I doubt they've come across the colregs at all yet but good luck to em I say (cos I was one once) and I'll slow or stop or go whichever way seems to be best at the time.

Little sailing boats don't need the regs cos many are simply struggling to get the thing to go in any direction at any speed at all other than sideways with the tide. It would be unreasonable of me to expect them to be able to change course or speed once they've got going so I just try to keep clear of their potential trajectory.

And I've discovered that I don't need to apply the colregs anywhere near so much now I've got a bigger, noisier boat that looks as if it might not stop if you got in its way.

(better not forget the /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

I spent last week not sleeping because of dogs. This week it is no sleep worrying about all those sailors and ggt roaming around at sea not knowing what the collision regs are. Enough to drive one to

Didn't mean to worry you. Please don't /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif so much that you get done for drink-helming the next day.

And I do know my colregs... I was just pointing out that when I chug out of harbour in a bigger boat, racing dinghys seem less inclined to run across my bow even if I've already slowed to let them.
