Hello all!
I am a final year design student at Loughborough University with a passion for sailing.
For my dissertation I am investigating the performance of sail yacht galley layouts and equipment whilst in use at sea, this is with the aim of developing design recommendations for improvements.
Your opinions and imput would be very valuable for this research. You can complete the survey anonymously, or leave your name so that I can thank you personally and let you know the outcome.
Here is a link to my questionnaire: https://lboro.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/investigating-areas-for-improvement-in-sail-yacht-galleys
Any and all responses would be very much appreciated!
Please don’t hesitate to contact me for further information: j.pickles-18@student.lboro.ac.uk
Thank you and happy sailing!
Julina :)

I started but did not finish as, from the galley layouts you illustrate, you are obviously only interested in people who have exceptionally large yachts :)

Me too, I didn't finish it either. These illustrations are so far removed from the type of galley required for the sort of sailing I do that I couldn't think of anything constructive to contribute.

I also found this survey inappropriate. My boat is 34 feet and my galley area and what it contains does not resemble any of the examples given. I understand that a galley in typical 30-40ft boat may not look a sufficiently robust research project with no freezer, no microwave and other items. A small galley in a medium size yacht may not impress the researcher’s tutor. I think this is misguided. The smaller the galley, the more important the design becomes. It’s far more difficult to design an efficient, safe and convenient galley for my boat than on a 60ft super yacht. Also, these big, expensive yachts will already have specialist expensive designers employed to design the galley space whereas those of us with much more modest boats won’t have anything like the time or money spent on our galleys. My message to the research student: go back to your tutor and emphasise the point that the smaller the galley, the more difficult the design brief.

Like everyone else (who has posted), these bear no relation to anything I have sailed - I've been on yachts with galleys like this but the owners didn't go anywhere near them - that's what staff are for. It might be better to approach professional crewing websites with this?

I think comments are correct but there are people here, YBW, who own 45' + yachts and whose galley's will fit, roughly, into the illustration. I'd suggest starting a thread in the liveaboard section of the forum as those that live on board, in the Med (for example) and cross oceans do tend to have larger yachts - though I know a live aboard couple circumnavigating in a 25' yacht - it takes all sorts.

So try here

Liveaboard Link

You have a number of replies here - people want to help - but cannot, if you take on board the support you are getting and cater for those owners, as well - you might achieve more than you originally thought.

I would take on board the idea that galley design might be more critical for smaller yachts and possibly have a different and more focussed questionnaire for those owners and I might also have another questionnaire for those who sail on multihulls.

I started to complete the questionnaire and struggled - we sail a catamaran, we don't have a gimballed stove, but we do have pan clamps, we don't need safety gear - because we sail flat, or roughly so - but as we are quite light we do bounce about , hence the pan clamps, rather than sitting at 25 degrees - so to answer some of the questions would develop answers that simply were inapplicable when read in the context of a monohull.

Take care, stay safe

For me, the biggest improvement to a small boat galley would be a cooker with a decent grill instead of the pathetic ones that are available (and I have a Force 10 which I hoped would be an improvement on the Bainbridge/Plastimo/Neptune et. al. offerings).

Thank you all for you comments and suggestions! I also think that the small the space then the more critical the design decisions become. Sorry if the questionnaire was misleading,
Unfortunately for this dissertation, due to budget and time limitations I will not be able to investigate smaller sizes or multi hull yachts.
However, once I have analysed my results and created recommendations I would love to get some expert opinions on how these would translate to other yacht types. If anyone would be interested to share their feedback on this please let me know. These interviews would be online in a few weeks and no longer than 45 minuets.
Thank you again,
Julina :)

Started, but like many others abandoned the survey as it is a million miles from my type of sailing. I sail all sorts of boats from 10 to 30 meters and have never seen anything like the pictures.

As with others who have replied, the galley’s illustrated bear no relationship to my boat or any of those I sail with, in fact they look better than my galley at home, so haven’t completed the survey.
