I\'m Feeling Depressed (nb)

I have for the last number of weeks attempted to d/load many different types of chart plotter programs and despite help from every quarter I have been spectacularly unsuccessful.
My ‘puter tells me that d/load has been successful but will it run, like bu***ry will it? Friends tell me (on the phone) that all I have to do is goto this, click that, press this tab and all will be well. NO, I click that, don’t get any tabs, what I do get is a box that asks me which program I wish to open the doc with and the list is endless, from MS paint to Word to Winzip to Outlook. If I get bold and chose one it then snidely tells me that it is un-supported and can’t open it, “file path incorrect”.

This simple operation has suddenly made me realise that I know nothing about computers, that in my advanced years (50+) that I’m now fallible, technology has finally got the better of me. I can’t remember from one second to the next a simple file path like
//my docs/simple/whateverfile=sinbin?exe/bloodsweatandtears/file/cigbin-cog&bollocks.

One wrong letter out of place and this dam ‘putor laughs at me as though it’s daring me to try to get it right and what’s worse is there are people out there that understand it and make it sound so simple, making me feel totally inadequate.

To make matters worse in the last couple of weeks Winzip has completely packed up on me and refuses to open anything. Word has suddenly decided not to replace any words in my documents without eating into the words in front of it, so I end up by trying to make a simple edit by adding a word and chasing the whole lot to the end of the doc overwriting everything.

GEZZS I’M PISSED OFF.

It’s now touch and go as to whether I hate ‘putors or politicians more?

What you need is a friendly 8 year old, who will sort everything in seconds

Word should be easy to solve, just need to change a setting. Winzip, reinstall. Chart packages, you need someone to walk you through it. You can with modern technology give access (to someone you trust totally!!!!!) to your computer, so they can type in commands and use it as though they are sitting at your computer, from theirs, while you watch, and they talk you through it on the phone.

The reason Word eats the characters in front as you type is that its in 'overwrite' mode. Open Word and press the insert key once and you will be back in 'insert' mode. Save your file and all will be fine. Word tends to save its settings (including which taskbars are open etc) with each document you save.

Re: For sale

I've got one of those, are they worth taking to the Antiques Road Show? What is really sad is I still have a stock of carbon paper and pink file-copy paper!

Re: For sale

Many moons ago I remember a rather buxom young lady at work wearing a T-shirt with "Cover your boobs with Snopake" emblazoned on the front. Ah, the good old days......

I am listening to BBC Radio 4 as I read and write here, and they have just said that 40% of all patients visiting GPs' surgeries across the country do so because they are depressed. You are not alone!

You've got the answer on Word and probably on Winzip. If you still cant get Winzip to run ( and the earlier versions sometimes couldnt cope with big files like most chartplotters are), download the evaluation version from their site.

The chart programme issue should be simple. You are trying to open them - and they dont need opening. The need "running".

But first, what you have dowloaded is most likely a zip file. If it isnt, then skip this bit. Double click on the file, and Winzip should boot up and allow you to open the zipped up chartplotter file. Save the opened files somewhere useful and remember where. Close winzip afterwards.

Now go to "start" then "run" and use the "browse" until you find the programme (exe) file for your chart programme. Highlight it, click on run, and it will then execute.

To make life easy in future, right click on the exe file you have found and put an icon on the desktop if the prog doesnt do that automatically.

Or get your grandchildren to help you! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
