I\'m buying a liveaboard

Hi i'm going for a change and need to know the limitations of a motor cruiser and a river cruiser.
Can I cross the english channel aboard either?
Comfort is also a factor.
What are the best courses to take to learn basic navigation and sea knowledge?

Remember Dunkirk.

Yes, if you pick your weather. Make sure that you have seagoing safety gear (flares. liferaft, VHF) and nav gear, and that any openings above the waterline can be effectively closed off if the weather does kick up.

Basic Navigation & Sea Knowledge

For basic navigation, I'd recommend a day skipper theory course in your local adult education centre (check out www.rya.org.uk for details) and also get your day skipper practical for confidence.

As to "sea knowledge", this is really only gained from experience and is always improving with everyone.

You might have a event-less crossing in calm seas or you might hit a fog bank with a 100m container ship heading towards you. What do you do ?

hi. A purpose built river cruiser is often shorthand for "a bit gutless and cheaply made, so don't take this out to sea". Duitch steel river cruisers are the exception, cept continental rivers are hug.e Lots of sea boats cruise rivers. One thing is airdruaght, a yardstick for the area you plan to cruise. The other issue is engines: if the boat has turbo-charged diesels, as many newer ones do, then they won't like bumbling around for too long without the turbos running. A twin-engined non-turbo sounds the right thing for sea and river.
