..... my post on the MAIB report on the Stena vs RN boat has been moved into the cesspit of the Lounge, much to my disgust. No idea why and I have no intention of going there to find out what drivel has been added.

That's a shame, because these reports have lessons for everybody.
Would you like me to have a look, if you can't face it?

I had a look. Nothing abusive yet, but nothing really useful or informative either.

I share your disgust though I am guilty of some hypocrisy since during the tedium of lockdown I developed the unfortunate habit of looking in there.

Thanks to all who got involved, the thread has returned from the cesspit, not entirely unscathed - the title has been changed.
Why the mods thought a thread that started with the URL of an MAIB report was "non-boaty" I have no idea. Maybe the strain of working from home is getting to them.

Quite why you dismiss a popular and engaging forum full of a wide range of interesting subjects as a cesspit is beyond me. A bit rude, actually and disrespectful.

Ooops. The MAIB (Moderators' Accident Investigation Board ) has been informed, and the culprit will be restricted to two chocolate biscuits a day for ten days. It is felt that such a draconian punishment and loss of privileges more than compensates for the aleatory way the OP's thread was moved around the various forums. The accused's plea that he was overwhelmed with checking new applications from a Russian website was rejected after the Board had scrutinised the evidence very closely.

As always, some people have to use sweeping statements to describe the Lounge as a negative place. Sure, it can be challenging but it is also incredibly informed. Advice on many matters from health, relationships, finance, insurance, building, vehicles, legal, political etc has been given freely by people who are experts and folks who are well meaning but not expert. To dismiss the Lounge as a cesspit is wrong. In PBO there is a thread right now that has generated robust discussion with a sweeping suggestion applied to the forum. As always, the real issue is with the person who can't stand to have their opinion, position, information challenged. No one is forcing you to be insulted, to be unhappy, to take part or defend a position you may take. You are not obliged to respond to anyone who comments on a post that you may make. A grumpy man was always complaining about how reading the news papers made him unhappy with all the bad news. The answer was simple, stop reading the papers, as you can't control the content. The Lounge is an excellent place, just learn to control yourselves and enjoy the meadow of flowers growing all around the cess pit.

In my case, because I have dipped in from time to time with the same sort of reluctant interest one gives Mumsnet or the rotting carcase of a sheep.

Yes, that's the issue, really.

When the Lounge collecively shows courtesy and respect to women, ethnic minorities, gay people, foreigners and indeed to anyone who is not an elderly, white, British straight man (albeit fascinated by gay people) who thinks UKIP is left-wing and who once saw a boat then the Lounge collectively may be a place for civilised people to go. In the meantime it's an embarrassment.

Like the Royal Navy's professional watchkeepers, I bet he didn't see that coming.

Alternatively, go there and try to make it the civilised place you want it to be, calling out frothy-mouthed idiocy for its idiocy, but politely.

Yes, some threads degenerate into slanging matches, but it's always possible to leave those who are determined to have a punchup and go to another thread. When it's only a couple of idiots, they run out of steam soon enough.

It's not for lightweights.
