Sailing East from Yarmouth, mile or so west of Cowes with gentle warm variable winds, very relaxed, I noticed a barge displaying restricted in ability to maneuver day shapes one tug to the south attached by a cable- Best to keep clear so I change course to avoid the pair then notice another tug about 300 metres to the north of the first combination, it took a very close look to see the cable from the barge to the other tug arrrrrgggggg.. I was still a way away from that one but anything less than a very sharp eye would have resulted in a disaster.. BEWARE there were no day shapes visible on the second tug!!!!!

Re: Me too!

Same area. Oil rig supply boat in static position for most of the day so I assumed he was anchored. Surprised as I got quite close to find he was holding station using DP and lit, even though it was sunny, for mine sweeping. A little workboat intercepted a few yachts who got nearer than I did to explain that they were sweeping.

Spheres !

Load of crap. You did not goof at all.

You observed, deduced and acted.
Then you continued to observe, deduced again, refined the original deduction and acted.

We cannot always jump to the correct conclusion first time, often it takes a couple of goes. The trick is to never assume that what you first did was right, keep checking.

An interesting scenario.
