Caladh , this May be a long shot since your original post is back in 09 . I have the same problem now with my 02 built Malo 41 . With Malo now bust ( and I am told also the company that supplied the original windscreens to Malo , back in the day) I’m struggling a bit to find a quality supplier . Boat based in Croatia now where there is reasonable expertise but they’re saying I need new frame . Ideally I’d go for a new stainless steel if I could find a supplier . Any thoughts would be most welcome .thank youHas anyone replaced the windscreen and/or the aluminium extrusions that holds the windscreen and if so can you provided and pointers and suppliers ? Hi Caladh, how did you get on with your Malo windscreen? I am in a similar position with corrosion on the bottom rail of the windscreen. Mine is a 2003 model, with the top and bottom rail one piece bent extrusions.
Was it a difficult job to dismantle? Reassemble? What did you use to remove the corrosion?
Any information would be helpful.
Thanks
fearmhuir not sure what the etiquette is here but I don’t seem to be able to send you a private message ( user error on my part I’m sure ) but I notice your just up the road from me ( I’m Dublin based bit boar in Croatia ) and I own an 02 built Malo 41 and wonder how you’re doing with sourcing parts and advice n maintaining a bot of similar age .Hi Caladh, how did you get on with your Malo windscreen? I had corrosion problems with my screen on a 2003 Malo 36. Three years ago I (very carefully) dismantled the entire windscreen, removed all the corrosion with a power washer at high power and close range. I then sprayed the inside faces of all the channels with an etching primer, and then Hammerite (I think?).
When reassembling I completely filled all the channels with black Tec7 before inserting the rubber seals. The main problem is that water seeps down into the bottom channel, sitting there and corroding the aluminium. Like me, you probably found a little pool of water sitting at the rear of the windscreen, just ahead of the arch. This is a sign that water is sitting in the bottom channel.
After three seasons, there is no sign of any corrosion evident as yet. I don't expect it to be a complete cure, but it has stopped it for now.
Screens were made around this time by either OMetall or Ertec in Sweden, and it is possible to have one made in stainless, but even an alumium version is around 9000 Euro plus transport!
Malo yachts are now part of the Sweden Yachts group, and there seem to be some personnel with Malo experience around, as I have had some technical queries answered by them. Try info@swedenyachtsgroup.se?
Obliged for the steer , thank you . got a very good reply .Welcome to the forums!
It's not user error on your part; new posters have some restrictions on what they can do until they've made a number of posts. It's supposed to keep the riffraff out! Hopefully fermhuir will see your post, he looked at this thread recently.
Very helpful thank you indeed . Pricey for a new one . Sweden yachts are helpful but they told me their windscreen supplier had gone bust . You’re right, Metal have their logo on the glass of my screen . I tried attaching a picture of my corrosion but was told to big to attach .
Exactly . Seems to have just really come on with a vengeance in last 12 months . Couldn’t get to boat in spring this year and in September it had really taken hold . Having it looked at by local crowd in Croatia but don’t want a bodge job so may need to take a more radical approach next season . Age, a terrible process !I assume that most of the corrosion is on the bottom rail, and where the uprights are fitted into this? That was the case with mine.
I had a side glass panel in my fixed Bav screen shatter last year. I cleaned out the sealant and saved the rubber fixings. Then had a glazier in Felixstowe come and replace with toughened glass to also incorporate a grab handle secured through the glass. One season later all is well.If you haven't already the other place to post for help are the Moody and Bavaria fora as a number of Moody's have fixed screens along with the Bav Ocean models. I know that a Moody 36 had to replace a cracked screen and it was a pricy job. Not without complications.
Have you looked at the Halberg Rassy parts site.. they sell parts and fixing rail which may deal with your issues..
The lower part on the the HR screens are a fixing strip which is easily replaceable and available on the HR parts site..
