Hello,

I've never put a foresail on by myself before, and only once on this boat, with the previous owner. No doubt I should have paid more attention.

Today is the perfect day for it, barely any wind, on the bow. I'd appreciate any help, please.

The furler was presumably made in the 1990's, and it's a make I've never heard of before, a Heino Haase Segel. Their website is in German only, and I dom't see my model on there.

This is what I have:

Should I put the sail on like this?

Or like this?

Or some other way?

Thanks.

Your bottom pic is correct. Now slide the top of the bolt rope on the front edge of the sail into the wider slot at the bottom of the aluminium foil, then slide it further up so that it's gripped by the narrow slot and can't come out. Then haul away to the top, feeding it in as you go.

EDIT BTW those shackles need seizing with Monel wire before you send them 40 feet up, to stop them coming undone. Otherwise they'll choose to do so at the most inconvenient moment and you've got a sail coming down and a halyard stuck at the top of the mast.

Firstly, feed the top of the sails's luff rope into the foil's feeder (you can see the feeder in your second pic).

Then attach the head to the top swivel, as in your third pic.

Now slowly haul the sail up by the halyard, feeding the rest of the luff rope onto the feeder as it rises: two people, working as a team, make this easy.

When the sail is fully raised, secure the tack.

Edit: oops ... beaten to it

You can get a feeding attachment consisting of an incomplete ring with a bit of cord to tie it below the tack. The luff is fed into the ring and then the slot. It is said to make the job easier for single-handed use by pre-aligning the luff with the feed. I can't say that I have found it very useful myself, but others may find otherwise.

Attach the sheets to the clew before hoisting making sure there is no twist in the sail. Also check the halyard is not wrapped around anything higher up.
