Hi all,

I have been offered a 14' 6" X 4' 6" clinker open boat. No idea of the class but she has a small forward deck and aft deck, just big enough to put the lifebelts in. She is rigged for sailing having alloy spars, and has a small O/B bracket along with rowing rollocks. She has no keel (i.e. drop keel) just a small wooden runner along the length of the bottom. Just at about the waterline there are two 'bilge stringers' but on the outside of the hull. They are not decorative or structural but must have some purpose. She has a removable rudder.

Not sure of materials but this is a very old boat that has been out of the water for 12 - 15 years and is hanging from the rafters of an old boat shed. She is going to need work to bring her back to life, including some more copper rivets I am sure.

I know it is a difficult task but does anyone have any idea what she might be worth?

Look forward to your replies.

John

It sounds thoroughly delightful - just like the "Swallow" of Arthur Ransome's "Swallow's and Amazons". That didn't have a centreboard either. The stringers running along the planking on the outside are there to protect the planking when the boat is hauled up on a beach. The "how much" aspect depends on
[a] the condition of the boat and how much of it has to be replaced,
the difficulty of replacement of damaged areas. eg. a rotten keel is worse that a scuffed inwale.
[c] how badly does someone want that particular boat, for whatever reason.
[d] how badly do you want to sell it.

Have a look in the back of previous issues of CB and see what has been asked for similar boats in the past. Bear in mind that in each case there is a difference between the asking price and the final sale price. This difference will depend on the above factors plus how optimistic you have been in setting the asking price. It's a bit like the apochryphal 'length of a piece of string'.
Peter.

Thank you for your reply. I am looking to buy the boat, not to sell it but your comments remain valid. I havn't looked inside the boat yet as she is in slings but from the the outside she looks just very tatty, very unused and very lonely. I will wait with baited breath to see what number they come up with.

Fingers crossed

In most contries except Italy youd get it for free, or if there are fittings sail etc with it £50. I once paid £80 for an olyimpia sail boat with a rotten plank But she had the mast sails and all fittings, I could have put a copper plate and putty on and sailed her!! I dident i repaired her first!

Sounds Great Though are you going to varnish or paint(Much easeier!!!)

Lots of luck

If the boat is, as you say, quite old, it could be an Island Class Sailing dinghy. Many of these were made by Royal Navel dockyard apprentices up until the 50's. Originally gunter rig. If she has been hanging for years she may well have distorted. Value - not a lot.
