I've just been playing with soli's rec(power tool) and that seems to be very good and passes the numptie test as I managed to load it and use it with no probs.

Just been playing with Brendans rec,and that passes the numptie test as well!

have you tried the suite of Serif applications? They are free, and work well enough for me not to look elsewhere.
They are free, and include Page Maker and Photoplus.
I have been using Page Plus since the 1.0 version probably over 10 years now.

You will find that it is much much simpler than the first impressions you get from reading the "Topcat" guide. That is very comprehensive.

Used the site recommended but still can't upload any other than a small photo, either from photobucket or boatsontheweb. For example

How do I get this to appear as a large image?
What am I likely to be doing wrong?

From photobucket, are you right-clicking and then going to properties to get the url of the image???? if so, in the url towards the end but before the image name it says th_ which I believe is the thumbnail version. I had the same problem, but just delete the th_ from the url link and it should be the normal size again.

Oh, just looked at the properties of that pic you posted, not photobucket, so.... delete, towards the end, the .thumb then it should read the image name . pic type, and in this case should read boat_summer_2006_008_1024x768.jpg

You have done everything right except that you have copied the address from the thumbnail image instead of the main picture. On Boatsontheweb, clicking on the thumbnail image will open the main image and you copy the address from the properties for that image.

Photobucket automatically generates and displays a URL for direct links, an html tag and the bb code for message boards. You just copy and paste the one you want; bb code for this forum. No need to display the full sized picture or get the url via "properties" or even consruct the IMG tag yourself.

Afraid you will need to use a different site to my boatsonthe web if you want bigger. I imposed a size limit to make sure they werent too large and create bandwidth issues for me as i dont derive any revenue from hosting them.

Photobucket will save pics upto 1MB Thats a pretty big photo if saved as a jpg. This is only 121KB

I had been wondering if it was possible for sometime and this thread just gave me the incentive to try it.

I can think of times when it would be very handy if people did it. If several large pictures are included in a post, or even in different posts in the the same thread, it takes forever for them to down load for someone like me with a dial-up connection. So long in fact that I sometimes just give up. If the post contained thumbnails they would down load quickly, I could look at those and then click on any that interested me to see the full sized picture.
