Went to Milford for a few days, left boat on mooring for 2 days, went to bring her in ready to trailer home and found water halfway up bell housing! bilge pump switch blown probably luckily really as battery just had enough life to fire her up and get to shore. When on trailer noticed water coming out from transom /sterndrive joint I presume rubber gaiter failure. One lesson learnt,in future larger fuse in bilge pump circuit and carry a manual pump! also use a seperate battery for bilge pump. Now I face stripping sterndrive down ,its an OMC cobra and looking at the manual looks like a real fun job, anybody done this or have any advice, I know get a professional would be easiest!! Is it likely that the flywheel has sprayed water all over the starter (it works ok now) if it has the starter is likely to rust up rapidly and it looks like a swine to take off in situe. The boat is a 1989 Bayliner capri 1952 cuddy. Any advice would be very welcome or anybody know of an independent marine engineer in Warks/worcs/glos area ? need to get fixed soon as am off to annoy Scotland and Loch Fyne in 4 weeks time!!!

Starter will go U/S very quickly, probably alternator too.
Unfortunately this is an engine out job to fix properly. Use the oppertunaty(sp?) to wash salt off of engine and check sump is not got flaking paint. Also replace gimbal bearing and grease U/J's as water is bound to have got in there.

Identical problem with one of my Volvo DP's. It could be a couple of things (not that familiar with your drive set up) try the exhaust cow horn seal or try the seals for the transom shield, it could even be the transom shield itself - as mine turned out to be. BTW, I did not have to replace the shield, I had it built up and milled / drilled.

Good luck.

HAD/HAVE the same problem with my GMCV8 engine failed to start up again this w/e starter just whirred. third time had to have it taken off since renewing it after engine room flood,
we have a local engineer who squeezes into the engine bay .
strips off exhaust manifold and removes the starter.
Hell of a job last time he took it off it had rust flakes on the spindal or somethingfrom the bell houseing.I am convinced we got all the water out and the flywheel is not throwing water into the starter ,but I think crude and rust remains.
He is going down today to take it apart, as he did the original fix after flood he has never charged me a penny more.
I think for piece of mind the engine will have to come out and get sorted .its a bl***y great lump so not looking forward to it
