Help!-1965 Evenrude 90hp

I have a 1965 Evenrude 90 hp, Starflight 90, model 90593-c, serial no E01105, that ran great last season, and I'm trying to get it ready now for the summer..the prob is that the starter gear was fried the last time i tried to use it last summer, and it was replaced with a new starter. I have tried everything I know how, checking connections, taking out and testing starter, but the problem is that it turns the flywheel very slowly, not enough to give spark, similiar to an engine in a car starting at -20 degrees. If I continue to crank it, I will burn it up. Have a new battery, everything looks fine. I did bring it down from Mich to Mississippi last month, and perhaps something inside became jolted because of the ride? Someone told me once that there are needles inside the engine that have to be right on???? Had no idea what they were talking about. All the cylenders are in top shape, compression is good from what I can tell. I may have dropped a nut into the lower unit while working on it, but I dont think that would cause problems. Taking the lower unit off is a pain, never did that before, so Im afraid to try anything else unless I know what Im doing..Anyone have any ideas as to what to try next before i have to take it to a mechanic? any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated......thanks!!

That's an old motor! Have you tried rotating the engine by hand with with the plugs out? --this will tell you if the engine itself is free enough.
If it is still too stiff to turn over then the problem is inside. If it turns over readily then it points back to your starter motor or battery power supply.
I would try to find that missing nut before I ran it though!, you dont want to munch anything up.

It doesnt seem like the engine is partially seized. with the plugs out, the engine turns like a champ. The dealer to whom I orrigionally got the starter from gave me some tips, like disconnecting the alternater wires, the 2 yellow ones, but that was no help. Everything else looks fine. This engine is all electric, and does not have a pull start. All controls are electric also. Its a one of a kind I think, The boat is also Evinrude as is the trailer. Ther person I bought it from 2 years ago just had it rebuilt a year earlier. It ran great all last year until the starter gear stripped out because of the mounting screw comming loose. The bendix operates fine, like it should also. Will try cleaning the terminals again, on all connections. I am sure it is not an internal problem: otherwise the flywheel would have frozen. Any more suggestions? This is a one of a kind boat, and I have spent alot of time restoring it to almost new condition. I understand taht parts are hard to come by, but what else is new? lol...Thanks for your help.

sounds like an electrical fault to me (if the engine turns freely with plugs out)

try

1) all connections are clean (you havn't greased them have you ? as some greases act as an electrical insulator)

2) Is the starter motor a recon ? (has it been reconned properly or have you been properly conned !!)

3) is battery in good condition? (obvoius I know but have you tested it with drop tester?)

4) try connecting battery directly to starter with jump leads (if motor turns ok then problem is with the wiring elswhere)

5) I have known engines to struggle to turn over because of ignition timing faults (ie they are pinking so badly they stop the engine turning over)

6) er .........................!!!

note anything loose in the engine casing (where ever it is) is bad news and should be removed (you'll regret it if you leave it there (trust me !!!!)
