Thanks for all the replies - seems we didn't do anything too wrong. I'll make sure the rule book is well and truly digested in time for next year so that I can deploy Jimi's advice with confidence even if I do bump into the miscreant in the bar later. Better still, I enjoyed it so much, especially the start and finish, that I might try and persuade the chap who's boat I was on to enter a few more races in the meantime.
