It's hard to argue with RORC. I'm pretty sure we got a 0.03 penalty once for doing that.

There is a lot of folklore on what helps the handicap. If you're willing to splash the cash you can put a trial certificate in. Most people try a smaller headsail as IRC is generally accepted to penalise overlap.

On the same basis, it's hard to gain much from looking a similar boats unless they are genuine OD. Look at the way the handicaps vary amongst the J109 fleet.

The RYA have a NHC base number for the Hanse 370 of 0.985.

A quick Google also produced an IRC rating of 1.01 recorded in 2010:

Obviously the IRC rating is specific to that particular boat, but should be useful as a guide.
