I took part in a Tideway dinghy race yesterday starting at Putney.
The river was disgusting. There was a strong smell of sewage and the surface of the river had a disgusting brown oily sheen.
There was about an inch of rain while we were towing the dinghies downriver from Twickenham and as usual this heavy rain meant that Thames Water had to dump raw sewage into the river.
I understand that a major under river sewage pipeline is being constructed over the next few years to alleviate this problem.
Winds for the race were light so we did not get down as far as Westminster but on the other hand we were all grateful that there was no risk of capsizing!
