The RYA book of diesel engines is a good primer, and so is their one day course. However, if you want to do basic maintenance like change filters, set tappets, winterise the engine and then recommission etc and the like, you'll probably need the engine's workshop manual to show you where bits are.
For example you can change the oil filter, and primary fuel filters on my 1GM 10 Yanmar fairly easily (you can see them!) but the fine fuel fliter is not immediately obvious. (Of course once when you know where it is it's obvious!)
To set the tappets you need to know where the timing marks are and the correct gap.

Can any forum members recommend a good general diesel manual, that covers maintenance etc.

The previous owner left a few diesel engine manuals on board when I bought Rogue. I looked at them, looked at the engine, looked at them again, looked at the engine - none the wiser.
Then I did the RYA Diesel Engine course, and all became clear, plus a few electrics principles which were previously gobbledegook.
£90 well spent.
PS: I was the only one who took laminated photos of various parts of my engine, so these were used as examples a few times during the day - so I got some advice specific to my particular engine.
