Gaffer tape !!

When repairs were being made to keel ... we needed to shield the area from direct sun and also stop any dust / crud from being blown on to the repairs while working ... a cheap tarp was then taped along the hull ...

Now all completed and back home ... the Gaffer Tape used to fix the tarp remains stuck to the hull ...

I now have the unenviable job of scraping it off ....

Tried petrol on it ... basically if anyones ever used this stuff and got oil or petrol anywhere near it after ... its fallen off ! Well - on that hull it just carried on being stuck .. petrol had no effect on it.

Next will be hot air gun ... try soften the adhesive .... then liberal use of Goo-Gone IF I can get the tape off ...

Maybe leave it over the winter. I had some Gorilla brand Gaffa tape on a bumper of a car. The tape deteriorated over a summer, okay it will be winter in your case, and just came away with gentle scraping. The glue residue became brittle.

It was the worst part of taking my windows out and taping plastic over the hole for a couple of weeks. Petrol, acetone, meths every damn thing. A little bit each time but hours of elbow grease. No magic solution found.

As per Boathook's suggestion in #6, I've had success with lighter fluid on gaffer tape residue in the past.

Trouble is that the tape when pulled strings and leaves most behind .. and fluid cannot penetrate to the adhesive.

I can get the adhesive residue off ... its getting the tape off ! Its been on too long.

Acetone is no use, it evaporates too quickly. I have had good results using white spirit to remove the residue and it seems able to soak through the tape as well.

You need a caramel wheel, chemicals are a waste of time as you'll need to rub the goop off anyway so just use one of these instead. Works great for us when we forget to take off masking tape and the UV dries it out -

You need a caramel wheel, chemicals are a waste of time as you'll need to rub the goop off anyway so just use one of these instead. Works great for us when we forget to take off masking tape and the UV dries it out -
