Cracking stuff indeed. And DSC is HORRIBLY out-of-date technology. I live in the eternal (and highly misguided) hope that someone in a position of power sees the light and DSC is replaced by better technology before it ever becomes mainstream...... dream on!

Looks ideal to find SHMBO when she has disappeared into the shopping mall/you can't find her/want to go home/going onto the HIGH band in the car park/which shop she's in etc etc ...

Great gizmology requires no purpose!
But seriously though folks, imagine that tech married to a VHF set, so that any caller could transmit their position digitally inside the voice message, and the recipient would get a course and distance to steer to meet with them.. Or beef it up to MF - whoops, we've got a cheap epirb. Rescue at sea, rescue in the moors and mountains.
Give then to a dinghy fleet - when the fog comes down the club launch can round them up in no time.
Must admit, I'd like a look around Garmin's R&D facility!
PS to YM - when you get Rinos to review, can I do the review please!

hang on a mo...is this not what the Dutch are required to do now (transmit position or is yacht's name) on vhf?
Would be good idea if they combined DSC+vhf+gps?

Take it to the extreme.....
..... come the day when we all have electronic ID tags inserted into our bodies at birth, the 'authorities' will be able to tell exactly where you are, what course you are on and even what you are thinking!!! You won't even need a radio because all communication will be via thought waves..... Might help when you're lost in a pea-souper in the Needles channel but what about when you're sneaking off to a secret assignation with your mistress?!

Howya goin to get useful GPS battery life out of something that transmits as well?
"Equip the family with them" HA! Betya the'll ALL have flat batteries when the one and only useful occassion comes along. If the kid is likely to get lost buy him an ACME Thunderer and put it on a ribbon rouind his neck and get him to blow it when lost. Battery life? Infinite.
Good Alternative:- With only 2 miles (at best over flat terrain) they're no better than one of those "Personal radios" from Maplins.
Better Definition:-
A GPS equipped with a device which is guaranteed to give you a permanently flat battery AND to have any use at all you need to buy TWO.
Best Advice:-
Put your money into saving for your old age!
