A friend of mine has given up sailing, and has a few boaty bits for sale - and I've got first refusal (isn't that nice?).

I would be interested in his Furuno 1832 radar - any-one got any experience with this particular bit of equipement? What's it like - features, easy to use, reliability, etc...

Please no comments as how a Raymarine,... whatever would be better. Radar is not a very high priority on my purchase list; but I could get this particular bit at a bargain price, so this is the only one I'm interested in at the moment.

Thanks

good enough for me to say (seriously) can I have second refusal?

spec=

1832 4.0 kW Transmitter, 36 NM Radar System with 10 Inch Monochrome CRT Display and 24 Inch Radome

Perfect for my little fishing boat.

Please pm me if you don't want to go head - I could give you some excellent sob stories on my radar woes!

I asked a lot of local fisherman about radar. the general pinion is Furuno... seems a lot of fishing boats here have them.. BUT .. what about local service and spare parts.. is there some outlet close by that you can trust.. if so , go for it...certainly I would buy Furuno first.

It's also my experience - fishermen go for Furuno most of the time. Dependable, accurate,...

Most of my electronics equipment (VHF, GPS & NAVTEX) is Furuno; and if I do buy radar it will most likely a Furuno. However, I have no experience of using radar on board a small(ish) sailing yacht.
In particular - how does this set hold up in "not so good" weather, how good is the GPS interface, isn't it too bulky to fit on a yacht, etc... . I've downloaded the manual, so I know what it can/should do - but I'm looking for opinions from an existing owner.

Re: after service - I have bought all my Furuno stuff either second hand, or on-line as cheap as possible. Installed it myself (with a more electronically adept friend), and truth be know - nothing has ever gone wrong with it!.

We've got one - seems a good bit of kit. Possibly not quite as easy to use as e.g. the JRC1500, but the spec is good and the image clear. Plenty of features.
